Breaking news: ABC to cease broadcasting WAFL at end of this season

WAFC have just announced that the WAFL will not be telecasted on ABC TV after the 2014 season.

No tv deal has been done for 2015 season.

It leaves VFL as the only state league remaining on ABC TV for 2015

Not for much longer I would think

The Abbott govts cuts should be a good excuse for the mob in Sydney that really run the ABC to save some money.
Its much cheaper to run old shows on a Sat afternoon than spend thousands on an outside broadcast.

If the TV goes it will just be another nail in the coffin of the former VFA and downgrade the current disjointed VFL to local league status.

I wonder what will be replacing the WAFL? Very concerning for the future of the VFL here. If the ABC does go under, maybe Channel 10 / ONE HD might be an option?

Northport sorry to sound like a pessimist but you would think that if ABC left then no other channel would be willing to pick up the 30 k coverage of the VFL. Those numbers are more like #31 numbers - so perhaps the best we can hope for is perhaps a review / highlights package on that channel. You wouldn't think that the 30 k weekly coverage would be enough for a commercial station to take it on.

Those ratings are fairly standard for the timeslot, it would come down to cost. Some sort of version of the SANFL model seems to be what the WAFL is aiming for but need to secure a sponsor for the brodcast, which apparently is a pretty good chance of happening:

The only thing that might save the VFL telecats is that they rate ok for a Sat afternoon as some of the AFL games on the Secondary CH 7 interstate channels dont do much better

No chance a commercial broadcaster will want it unless they are paid significant money to show it. Best chance of it happening would be a midday game on a Sunday leading into the AFL telecast.

The advantage the SANFL and WAFL have is they've got two AFL teams in the competition so there are gaps in the schedule for them to show local footy around that. The media focus in Victoria is so AFL dominated.

Online Streaming will be they way to go, even local contry leagues are doing it - surely the VFL could afford to.

7 Mate would be a very good fit and they could televise all games from say Punt Road both Sat and Sunday.I find the ABC TV matches are getting some what stale and a new broadcaster would bring a new fresher look.
