2014 VFL Finals - Week 1

It's called the Legendairy Finals Series and there are some potentially great games to match!

SATURDAY AUGUST 30

North Port Oval - Qualifying Final
2:10pm: Port Melbourne v Box Hill Hawks

Victoria Park - Elimination Final
2pm: Collingwood v Sandringham

SUNDAY AUGUST 31

VU Whitten Oval - Qualifying Final
1pm: Footscray v Williamstown

North Port Oval - Elimination Final
2:10pm: Werribee Tigers v North Ballarat

Port v Box Hill has plenty of recent history, as does Willi v the Scray, the North Melbourne derby should be a good one even though both teams are a little off form of late, with only Sandy v Collingwood lacking some genuine rivalry.

I know some others will disagree, but I like having games at Vic Park and Whitten Oval as well as Port, three grassroots grounds with great history.

Interesting to see Whitten Oval and Victoria Park used for finals. I thought the Yarra Council didn't allow additional games at Vic Park so as not to inconvenience dog walkers.

Also why did Footscray play home games at Kardinia Park and Highgate Recreation Reserve if they can now host a final at Whitten Oval? I heard there was a limit on the number of games at Whitten Oval (imposed by who I'm not sure? local council?)

I am all for these finals to be played at these venues but I am surprised they have been used as it seems contrary to the controls over there use that I have heard previously.

The Collingwood Twitter feed says free entry for the game there next Saturday. They'll get a massive crowd, but the VFL would be losing a substantial gate.

And Whitten Oval supposedly doesn't have adequate facilities for the away teams, yet they've scheduled the Development league curtain raiser there as well. Wonder what arrangements they've made to cater for that?

Ah well - if they've earned a home final good luck to 'em. Far as fences/gates AFL Vic set the rules (obviously to suit the AFL clubs) and they're the ones missing out on $$$.

Looking forward to Port v Box Hill. Should be a cracker. I'm even happy to fork out $15!

My tips below

SATURDAY AUGUST 30

North Port Oval - Qualifying Final
2:10pm: Port Melbourne v Box Hill Hawks
Great rivalry over the past few years especially in finals. Box Hill going well but Port even better. North Port Oval might be too much for Box Hill. Port by 23 points

Victoria Park - Elimination Final
2pm: Collingwood v Sandringham
Collingwood will have too many out. Expect the zebras to win and win easy. Sandringham by 46 points

SUNDAY AUGUST 31
VU Whitten Oval - Qualifying Final
1pm: Footscray v Williamstown
Cracker of a game. Seagulls and Dogs both in great form. Williamstown to advance to Preliminary final. Seagulls to win by 18 points.

North Port Oval - Elimination Final
2:10pm: Werribee Tigers v North Ballarat
Battle of North Melbourne. Roosters were going great until hit a big hurdle at North Port. Werribee going just ok. Very even battle. Werribee to win by 9 points.

If it is free to get in Vic Park it should be the same at Western oval.
This would ensure a decent crowd at both venues.

G'day guys, quick question about the QF at North Port - will I be able to bring the dog? I've seen dogs at Coburg and Box Hill but can't remember ever seeing any at North Port.

Cheers

Damn. Might have to wear some dark sunglasses and put a blue guide dog vest on her then. Thanks for the prompt reply.

I've never understood why people want to bring dogs to the footy. Makes no sense at all to me.

As for Whitten Oval. Their away rooms are a complete joke, and are not set up for football at all.

The ground surface however, is first class.

Again thanks all for the chat over the past season or so. Good to see some passionate VFA supporters still around.
