Rules are Rules!

Bizarre story in the Herald Sun today where Hawthorn are sulking about not being allowed to play a few unqualified players in the VFL Preliminary Final next week. They want to get "match fitness" into two recently injured players.

The suggestion put forward has been to give two Hawthorn listed players a run in the Young Guns Curtain Raiser.

I've got a problem with that. Firstly, it takes two spots away from other players who genuinely want a chance in the Young Guns game to show their worth and try to impress AFL clubs. And secondly, and perhaps more importantly, where do you draw the line? Geelong's VFL side is out, they might have a few players who they want to get "match fit" in case they are needed in remaining AFL finals, so are they allowed to play in the Young Guns game as well? Sorry Hawthorn, flog your players on the training track, don't compromise the VFL competition or a game designed to give young people a go. And AFL Victoria need to stay firm on it and not allow it to happen.

Hawthorn have requested permission to play McEvoy in the VFL even though he has not played enough games to qualify. This is a complete joke if the VFL bow to this. Hook changing rules to suit his beloved Hawks.

Didn't this happen a few years back where a couple of Hawthorn players (Ellis?) were allowed to play for Box Hill DL side in a final even though they hadn't qualified?

This article relates to same issue. Absolutely ridiculous that it could even be considered. These are rules.. Not vague guidelines. Non qualified players should not be allowed in a VFL Finals series that they are not qualified to be playing in nor should they be depriving spots from kids aiming for a shot in the AFL. Against the spirit of the competition and makes the comp look amateurish.

It reminds me of the farcical situation of a North Ballarat assigned Roos player suddenly switching teams and playing for Werribee.

In today's telecast, half time, Phil Cleary said that if McEvoy was permitted to play Williamstown will take court action. Good on 'em. With Hawthorn not playing next weekend, why not throw in another few players as well??? VFL has to keep the AFL happy, even if it further destroys the VFL identity.

The VFL expects all players and clubs to abide by the rules throughout the season! How can they then turn around and allow an AFL club to have its way. If they go down this path then Willy should be able to recruit whoever they like from other clubs for the week.

It wont happen - silly of Hawthorn to even suggest it. If they want him fit get him on the training track, play a intra club match, run through the streets at 5:30 in the morning up the hawthorn town hall - like rocky 1 !!! etc etc.

I think the rules need changing. It a joke that all of these guys Schoenmakers, Suckling and McEvoy can't play. box hill would have been better off if Hawthorn had of lost this week as they could have all played. This is just so inconsistent. You guys have neglected the fact that Ceglar played afl on the weekend so he could actually play with BH this weekend as qualified so if McEvoy isn't allowed to play then they could slot him in. So I think Williamstown have been dealt a pretty good hand already.
Maybe if they appeal this in court we could also have them decide whether the 2013 development premiership should be taken off them and given to BH. After all they did go over the salary cap didn't they?

VFL needs to simplify the rules regarding AFL players playing VFL finals. Maybe say any AFL listed player must play at least say 7 or 8 VFL games during the home and away season to qualify for VFL finals. Right now there are too many variables that come into qualifying for VFL finals.
