The above-mentioned Rule 20.8:

VFL Rule 20 Participation in Finals - 20.8: Notwithstanding any other provision of these Rules, the General Manager of AFL Victoria can deem any person eligible to play in any match.

Well thats just AFL Victoria (AwFuL) giving themselves inbuilt loopholes to cover any double standards in their farcical administration (same as their drug 'investigations' and their tax deals with powerhouse clubs)

Glad this is over. We can now focus on some great games of footy this weekend. Let the clubs and league review the rule 20.8 over summer.Thinking Williamstown development team will go back to back as they are well coached and are a great bunch of kids. Fingers crossed my VFL team Port Melbourne can get the job done over my AFL team the Doggies. Yet to decide on Sunday's game between Box Hill and Williamstown. Will be a cracker, just waiting to see sides for game.

Agree Lauschie. Great weekend of footy ahead. I'll be there both days thanks to the scheduling of Willi and Box Hill for both days. One thing, the reserves GF will be tight - not sure my heart could handle another finish like last year.

jb,would have been nice if both Willi vs Box Hill games were on same day. Strange arrangements at times. Wont say to much about fixturing as it has got me in a spot of bother in the past. Hopefully the crowd on both days get value for money and have a great day out. Reckon all three VFL games will be decided by less then three goals. Young Guns game, not fussed about result there.

Mustang,
If they amend the rule next year they will be available.
Trevor Monti was on SEN this morning with Kevin Bartlett & was not happy. Podcast should be available later.

As always digs, you are on the money.

And that's a big point that most people have missed.

Hawthorn could have pushed it much harder and asked for permission for all 3 to play.

Instead they asked for permission to play one unqualified player, on the basis that none of the qualified players who played AFL last week were dropped back to the VFL.

I might be wrong, but I have a feeling that this is more about who will play rather then the ruling itself. I can't imagine Williamstown would have kicked up such a stink if it was Suckling or Schoenmakers who was going to play. Also, if McEvoy had played a shocker against Port Melbourne, I doubt there would have been any fuss at all.

It feels like this is a pivotal moment in the VFL/AFL competition history. AFL sides are obviously no longer content to have the competition run separately and virtually autonomously, and their needs are now incompatible with the competition as it stands. I understand Hawthorns desire to want their players to stay fit for their finals, but part of me feels this is more about ensuring the largest possible advantage for themselves and less about player welfare.

It's time that the VFL split into 2 divisions, or returned to separate VFA and AFL seconds, the agenda of the AFL clubs is clear now and it cannot be allowed to continue, otherwise some grand old clubs will simply cease to exist.

Go Borough!

Problem is averted if AFL-VFL finals are in sync but they're not and 2 years in a row Hawthorn have made a big issue by not being prepared to play by convention.

Hawthorn will argue they have played by the rules but the convention was that if a player wasn't qualified and the AFL had week off then that player didn't play.

If a club like Williamstown doesn't have the clout to prevent the convention being broken then heaven help the other clubs.
