Good year for ex VFA clubs

Good year for ex VFA clubs

Berwick won premierships in the newly formed SENFL. They won firsts, seconds, thirds (under 19s) and fourths (under 18s). Good article in today's Herald Sun on Page 5.
Mordialloc who won the second Division SFL GF last year came runner up to Dingley in the higher Division. Kilsyth who won only one game from their first five came good and made it to the GF but were not good enough to beat Warrandyte.

At least these clubs have their full identity and still exist in life after VFA.
Kilsyth only lasted three seasons in the VFA 82 to 84, Berwick 83 to 87 and Mordialloc from 1958 to 1988.

I guess it is better than folding and not having a side to follow but it definitely losses it's prestige playing in a lesser league. I reckon if port played in a lower league nany supporters including myself would only go once a year. Must be hard for those supporters who saw Mordi and Berwick play in their glory days in front of thousands.

17 PREMIERSHIPS, 33 x GRAND FINALISTS, 21 X Runners up

THE VFLS MOST SUCCESSFUL CLUB - THE MIGHTY PORT MELBOURNE BOROUGH!

I'M PORT MELBURNE BORN, I'M PORT MELBOURNE BRED, I'LL BE PORT UNTIL I'M DEAD!!!

In the mid 1980's the VFA wasn't as prestigious as many may think.
Div2 was a bit of a shambles from 1984-. The VFA wanted the prestige but the vast majority of clubs could not compete with the pressure of financial strain and dwindling crowds. The attraction for teams like Berwick to go back to the local leagues was a good decision. It's a lot easier to get players when your playing 5-10 minutes away from home. Not playing sunshine at sunshine in the middle of winter.

Skinner Reserve could become quite chilly in middle of winter especially on cold windy days.
