The VFL's Salary Cap
Body:
It must be difficult for the league to decide on the exact capping rules when there are four different types of clubs competing (standalone, AFL reserves, aligned clubs, shared alignment clubs). But if standalone sides are at a disadvantage against the aligned sides and Geelong, it's because they can't spend enough on wages. There's plenty of talent out there, but the SANFL gets too much of it because of their higher salary cap. I suspect that Port could afford a rise in the standalone clubs' salary caps. And Tassie probably wouldn't have made an alignment with the Kangaroos if they could just spend more on local players. (I'm not sure if this is true, but I read that there are players in the local Tassie comp who could play in the VFL, but who the club could not fit under the cap.) I'd be interested to know how much of a cap increase Frankston could afford.
