Wyndham’s sports lovers will be kicking goals with Chirnside Oval receiving $700,000 in funding to be used for improvements at the ground.

The State Government has committed $500,000 in funding and AFL Victoria has committed $200,000.  The money is part of the Improving Community Access to VFL Grounds Initiative and will be used to make several improvements to the facilities at Chirnside Oval.

Wyndham Council will project manage and undertake works that are approved by the State Government and AFL Victoria.

The works will include the installation of:

Ground lighting upgrades

Spectator shade structures

An electronic scoreboard

Terrace seating and

Goal netting.

Werribee Football Club General Manager Mark Penaluna said the improvements would benefit both players and spectators at the ground.

“We welcome the funding that Chirnside Oval has been allocated, which will lead to significant improvements,” Mr Penaluna said.

“This oval is used by many different sporting clubs and these works will greatly improve the playing and training facilities, as well as enhancing the clubs ability to attract greater crowd numbers.”

“As expectations rise on the quality of our oval surface and amenities, particularly from an AFL perspective, these floodlights will provide a standard that is suitable for night games being played.”

Wyndham Council City Presentation Manager Lois Binnie said the whole community would benefit from the works.

“These improvements will cement Chirnside Oval’s position as one of Wyndham’s premier sporting facilities,” Ms Binnie said.

“Upgrading lighting will allow for the possibility of night VFL games and extend the hours available for ground use, which is particularly important given the current drought conditions.”

 â€œThese works are in addition to projects that will be undertaken as part of Council’s 2008/09 Capital Works program including spectator mounding and terracing works.”
