Body:
I was having a browse throught the Scorpions website and noticed an article about Springvales '87 flag. Reading through it highlighted the VFA's attempt in '87 to seperate the league into 2 permanent divisions, and not have promotion/relegation.
http://www.scorpions.com.au/1987-vs.-port-melbourne.html
Division 1 would have been made up by:
Box Hill
Coburg
Dandenong
Frankston
Geelong West
Oakleigh
Port Melbourne
Prahan
Preston
Ringwood
Sandringham
Williamstown
And division 2 being:
Berwick
Brunswick
Camberwell
Caulfield
Moorabin
Mordialloc
Northcote
Springvale
Sunshine
Waverley
Werribee
I suppose it was an attempt 90 years later to do what the VFL had done.
It's interesting to note that Springale (Casey) and Werribee are the only teams that remain from the proposed permanent division 2.
7 of the 12 division 1 sides remain in the VFL.
I doubt it would have worled to any great effect anyway, as by that stage alot of clubs were already starting down the barrel, not sure that being in a permanent division 1 wouls have saved Dandenong, Geelong West or kept Prahran in?
How in depth was Ringwoods commitment, the VFA had wanted an outer east team for a while by that stage?
Definately glad Springvale fought hard to stay in, particularly after only joining the VFA 5 years previous, and ended up winning the flag that year!
