The matches at the weekend were just like watching a local H&A match!
By then we had the advent of TV so maybe people opted to stay home and watch this new invention instead of venturing out on a cold night
The VFA with the VFL actually put the money into the lighting at South Melbourne Lake Oval and were supposed to start playing matches in 1956 when the VFL started their night series but were blocked by the VFL till the 1957 season with Wednesday night games that were played for premiership points at the start of the H&A season.
Just the usual VFL dirty tactics!
The opening match in 1957 was Moorabbin v Williamstown by 16 pts that drew 8.000 and the second week Port played Williamstown in front of 10,000 Willy by 2 points.
There were 5 matches played in 1957 and 4 in 1958 the last match ever played there for points was again a Willy V Port which Port won by 9 points and ironically had good crowd of 8600 while the other 3 matches had drawn only 13,400 in total between them,
The experiment only lasted the two seasons as the crowds dropped away dramatically in 1958 causing losses to the VFA that were in part due to some bad weather and non top drawing clubs playing.
You are right Wally The ABC televised the VFA first in 1957.
The VFA holds the distinction of having the first ever match to be broadcast live on television in Australia, when the second half of the match between Oakleigh and Preston on 25 May 1957 was televised on Channel 2."Wikki
I also want Casey out of the finals race. They seem to have massively sold out. Southport v Brisbane would be a outcome.
But yes the crowd will be dismal. The 1936 crowd record might be beaten.
* It's time to restore the VFA name.
Brisbane v Southport gf would be good. I'll be hoping for that. Got no time for Melbourne seconds. Nothing left of the old springvale. Melbourne using the casey ground, wear melbourne colours and called the demons. Enough said. The crowd will be poor for the vfl gf regardless. Southport winning will be ironic. The sharks wanted to join the afl but gold coast got the nod. Sharks v lions in an all QLD vfl gf played at carlton. Strange times we live in.
You couldn't possibly make it up !
If you were to suggest this scenario a few years ago they would have put you away !
We might be from the bush. but we ain't green
A major embarassment looming - the AFL/VFL might have to resort to handing out free tix to all the surrounding schools
This is a chance I will t be part of the record crowd that did not attend a VFL grand Final
