Skilful midfielder Steven Greene capped off a sensational year for Box Hill by winning the 2005 Box Hill Hawks Club Champion in a lavish function held at Docklands on Saturday, October 8.
Greene finished the count with 17 votes, two ahead of Hawthorn rookie Kristan Height.
Greene, who played three senior games with Hawthorn in 2005, was consistent throughout the season for Box Hill and regularly featured in the best players. Hard running and high disposal tallies were a feature of his play.
Greene played 17 games for Box Hill, with his best games coming against Williamstown in Round 11 and Port Melbourne in Round 15.
Height, who has been with Box Hill for two years, was runner-up for the second consecutive year after another successful season for the nuggety on-baller.
Height filled roles in defence and attack plus the occasional stint on the ball, with his highlight being the latter part of the season when he fulfilled defensive duties and convincingly beat high-profile opponents in Liston Medallist Ian Callinan and Justin Berry.
In third position was departing skipper Clinton Alleway, who in his last year at City Oval performed admirably in times of adversity and finished the season with 14 votes.
Alleway, who will play with North Adelaide in the SANFL next year, single-handedly helped the Hawks to victory over the Northern Bullants in Round 5, with the skipper booting six goals including the match-winner at the 31-minute mark.
Rounding out the top five were young gun Cam Howat who finished with 13 votes, and tough midfielder Matthew Ball with 11.
In the reserves count, defender Nick Kane took home the award edging out teammate Alister Neville to win by a solitary vote.
Kane, the brother of Hawthorn’s Ben, had a stellar year down back and was instrumental in many of the team’s victories by nullifying the opposition’s best forwards.
Kane finished with 15 votes, one of ahead of Alister Neville who snared 14 votes from just eight games.
Neville was involved in the senior side on 11 occasions, with several appearances in the best towards the end of the year, and he looks like a player that Box Hill can build a team around.
Finishing third was exciting young gun Evan Johnson, who polled 12 votes. After making the switch from the Eastern Ranges, Johnson played some good football through the midfield and was rewarded with a senior appearance during the season.
Sam Gibson and Ryan Breese rounded out the top five, with the midfield duo each snaring 10 votes.
