The future of the AFL and our state leagues

I don't think AFL has got a clue on what will happen in the state leagues.
You can forget about AFL reserves comp. The VFL could again become the VFA you never know.
The current VFL could join forces with NEAFL. Who knows what will happen. The AFL doesn't either.
Looks like most of the local footy leagues may have already pulled the pin for 2020.

If the afl cut their lists to 35 where do the other players play at ?  They have to play somewhere. With a few injuries you might get end up with six or seven players left. Forget about an afl reserves comp it will not happen. You might end up with stronger vfl or vfa teams, stronger local teams due to less at afl lists. You should have decent excess players running around at local level. Interesting to see what evolves in the footy world in next 2 months allround. At least off field.

A lot of uncertainty at the moment and I tend to agree, it's all up in the air. What is it about a AFL reserved comp that you think makes it unlikely to go ahead ? The cost ?

Digs that article made mention of North Ballarat having a presence in a new VFL league. Wondering what are your thoughts on this ?

I wonder if the AFL clubs go at it on their own if their would be enough interest from about 5 other vic clubs to participate along with the stand alones in a new VFL/VFA comp or wether they are happy playing in their existing comp.

So many questions at the moment and not enough answers, NO WONDER I HAVE NO HAIR !!!

There will be a state league comp for certain but the biggest worry is who will be in it? Almost certain an AFL only reserves comp has been ruled our due to costs, and I  doubt a VFL/Neafl merger would happen. In the current landscape it will also be too expensive, but if it does I fear for our standalones. The financially weaker clubs Coburg and Frankston would be at serious risk of getting the arse if it happened. And if any more of the alignments finish this year it would complicate it even more. Can't wait to see what the AFL  comes up with.

Mega, It will snow in hell before North Ballarat Football Club resume in the VFL or similar leagues !!

Maybe a team from the region ? However who's going to finance them.?

Never thought that I would say this but I'm not that disappointed that we are no longer involved because of the shambles it is at the minute.

Hi Mega.  A quiet request.

You sign off with 33 Grand Finalists, 17 Premiserships and 21 Runners-Up.

17 + 21 = 38.    Can you explain?

Let's hope we get to the stage this season where we can argue about our respective clubs' chances of adding to the tally.

Be safe and keep your distance.

Leigh Mathews ( my favorite Player/Coach of all time) floated the idea that the AFL players not playing in the AFL side are scattered all around the VFL clubs like they are in the WAFL

.He is also  with Ross Lyon pushing for 16 a side in the AFL to open the game up. The AFLW already play with 16 a side..

Better if they are scattered than linked to a particular club.

That's a good question Seagull. Their was a period early on that their were no finals and winning the comp was achieved by finishing 1st on the ladder - like how most soccer comps are worldwide. Therefore some of those runner ups were achieved by finishing 2nd on the ladder when seasons were decided by ladder position and no grand final was played.

Correct, the VFA only commenced playing finals in 1903 so any second-placed finish prior to then was by virtue of finishing second on the ladder at the end of the home-and-away games, not by being beaten in a GF
