Rd 5 Frankston v Nth Melbourne

Good win by the Dolphins in a relatively low standard affair. North were poor for most of the night - hard to believe there were 13 AFL listed players in that team.

Same old for Frankston - Newman and Fordham standouts again, Mynott very good in patches, Walker good with 4 goals and Riley had his best game for the year and not far off last years form. Love the way big Reidy is coming along. Coleman-Jones had the better of him overall but he did some nice things. A work in progress for sure.

So, Dolphins 2 from 4 - good wins against two moderates - North and Essendon, but couldnt handle the pressure from GWS and Werribee. Big test next week v St Kilda seconds will give us a better picture of where they are.

Interested in the thoughts of Dolphins supporters on Kai Owens. Always looks the part, works hard, leads up well and seems to be the go to when they are going into attack, but he cant take a mark and cant kick a goal. Same story last year, and I wonder how long they should persevere with him. I'd like to see him tried in defence for a couple of weeks. Looks like he has all the ability in the world but has not performed.

Well done to the dolphins. Great win. Harder next week but no reason they can't win against sandringham who have played in patches this season. If they can win and make it three from five it would be a good start to the season and build more confidence.

Great night at Skybus last night......Robbo's spot on, the ANZAC memorial before the game was terrific in the dark. Not a sound to be heard, not one yobbo, good job people. North weren't great, but I thought the Dolphins' pressure made them look very ordinary. They tried to play big ground footy on our sardine tin, and that was never gonna work. Give our boys a bit of credit Bearsman, North did roll Footscray last week!

Kai Owens, yeah......he's problematic. I keep thinking he is capable of good things but he's nowhere near strong enough overhead for a bloke his size. Magnificent kick, but that's not much good if you can't get the pill.

Thought Riley was outstanding last night, his best game for us in my opinion. Fordham and Newman are absolute warriors and never let us down. Stern was threatening as the crumbing forward and Will Walker's game as a mid sized forward was terrific. We do lack a serious spearhead though, Begley is ok but doesn't ever look like kicking a bag.

I thought the biggest positive last night was our defensive pressure. North really were choked inside 50 and aside from a couple of silly kicks into the corridor they never got a score easily. Arthurson and Max Williams are growing as players all the time back there and becoming excellent footballers for us. The future is bright!

Oh, and how good was it to hear the theme song blaring out after the game. First time I've ever heard it after a win at home and the fans couldn't sing it loud enough.

Their was some discussion on a Port Melbourne closed forum as to the success of Frankston off field and what they are doing to get the people through the gates. What do you lads see the club doing correct that is attracting the people through the gates ?

Night footy is one big key MegaA......there is a huge following for the local league down here, and many people are watching kids footy on Sunday too. The club has obviously requested that the majority of our home games are at night to avoid clashing and that is bring people in droves. Last night there were a whole bunch of blokes who had already been to a local game during the day. It's a bit of a carnival atmosphere too, with food vans and a jumping castle for the kids. I think also the club is appearing more professional than in the past. There's a dedicated stall for memberships and merchandise, sit down meals in the social club before games. It looks like a fair dinkum footy club, which to be honest, it hasn't always. It might seem strange to say, but losing our license a few years back might have been just what needed to happen. I think our membership was generally in the range of 300 up to that point, and now 1000 is being seen as the benchmark. Losing the team might have made a few people have a think about what our sporting landscape looks like without the Dolphins. I know the admin team work pretty hard at getting functions at the club, and I think SEDA have their base there too. Having the function centre utilised more often has to be a big help in terms of locals' awareness of the club.

Robbo is probably best place to answer this one.

Aj - agree about needing a key forward. Absolute must for next year. Begley isnt really a key forward but has been forced to play that role as there is no one else. At 188cm he's a small/medium opportunist forward definitley more dangerous roaming the flanks.

Also agree Williams has really stepped up this year and has become a good reliable player. The backline has way better structure this year so credit to the coaches for turning a big weakness into a strength.

Reserving my judgement on the Dolphins this year until they play a good team. To my eye they seem slightly less than last years model at this stage, but not much in it.
