I went to see Dandy Demons play Doveton Eagles at the Dandy Showgrounds last year. Watched the last 1/4 and a bit. Went straight from Springvale v Bendigo which was a tv game to the Dandy Showgrounds. When was the original Dandy Showgrounds moved to its current site ?

In the 94 GF Recorder it covers Coburg, Oakleigh, and Dandenong potentially facing the axe to trim the comp. to 8 teams for the new VFL. The same article says that Prahran bit the bullet and withdrew from the senior comp and would field a team in the VSFL U 18's. It goes on to say "the Two Blues were keeping their options open and would continue as an entity with the aim of regrouping financially and applying for a licence at a later date if one became available". I've heard they are over their financial troubles (currently D grade Amateurs) so wouldn't it be great to get them back - great club, history, & strip and have a track record of previous comebacks to the comp. It would also remove the bye. The article also says Oakleigh and Dandenong would be "encouraged to continue in the state U 18 comp". Are the current Chargers and Stingrays in any way linked to the old VFA clubs?

Stingray's are connected with Frankston. Aaron Edwards was a former Stingray's player. Dragons are connected with Sandy. The old VFA clubs Prahran, Dandenong and Oakleigh were stooged by the Under 18 teams. They would have been better off to go to a lower league and hang on to their senior teams. Prahran have resurfaced due to the Commonwealth Bank and Southbank (ex State Bank) merger of two VAFA teams. They took over and called themselves Prahran Amateurs. Dandenong are hopeful that they will comeback via Dandy Demons (ex dandy West). Oakleigh Devils, will they ever reappear ? The ground at Oakleigh has no outside fence but Oakleigh Chargers have played at the ground since its inception. Maybe an Oakleigh Devils can be reincarnated one day via the Chargers ?

It's very much the 'old' Prahran VFA club, from then-president Tim Habel right down to the supporters and training staff. Indeed, we still had several players from the last season in the VFA (1994), including one guy who'd played in the 1987 2nd Division Premiership. The club re-emerged in 1999 having paid off all its former creditors - a wonderful achievement, considering how some old clubs simply folded and were never heard from again. It effectively took over the playing staff from VAFA club Southbank and got the club to Toorak Park where it plays in a newly designed jumper which incorporates the PFC logo. (And a new business name - Prahran Amateur Football Club). Financially they are one of the stronger clubs in the Ammos not aligned to a school or university. Unfortunately, the club is not in a strong footy area and when i was there (about 5 years ago) recruited most of its players from country leagues (eg. OMFL, GVFL). However a strong junior program means that they'll have local kids come through and play for the club in the future, giving more of a 'local community' feel to the club.

Prahran, Mordialloc, Kilsyth and Berwick are the only former VFA clubs still in existance apart from those in the current VFL. Prahran was resurrected and the other three just continued in other competitions.

How right you are about the Old Redlegs there VFA. It is still on the cards but the Old Dandy West are being a bit stubbon at the moment about the switch. I was there when the doors closed at Shepley Oval for the Redlegs and to see that my hate for Gannon has not deminished one bit. We tried last minute deals with Springvale to merge and SFL to take us on, but with Gannon & Co plus police they just pushed us out the door. Then to add insult to injury Springvale played home games at Shepley. I probably have said that a couple of times and should get over it, but I can not. Berwick just keep blowing there money on big name recruits and go no where.

I can tell you that Dandenong were gone early in the year.....I worked with a guy who was heavily involved with the Victorian Cricket Association and he told me that Dandenong were broke and that they had approached the VCA about Shepley Oval being available because the football club were not paying their way.....he told me that Dandenong would be out of the VFA at the end of the season...and he he was right on the money......I remember giving Redleg supporters a lot of stick about that.....they all told me....what would I know.....hate to tell you guys...I was right!!! However it gave me no pleasure as Dandenong were a very strong club but they paid dearly for buying the 1990 premiership...it cost them their place.... I also worked with a guy whose brother was appointed the administrator of the Dandenong Football Club....he had access to all the Dandenong memorobilia.....whether to sell it off or not....not sure what happened there.. I fail to see how Ken Gannon was responsible for Dandenong's demise...the rumblings started when Tony Elshaugh left as he was told he wasn't going to be paid....that's the cold hard facts unfortunately

Sandy. The most successful club in the past 30 years

That was the 91 premiership side there Zebraman. Yes it was paid for but one General Manager who took of to Ballarat with a fair bit of cash didn't help. If Elshaugh wasn't getting paid then no one else was. Molly was not paid for 3 years but he tried to hang on. Gannon had an agenda to bring the Stingrays up from Frankston and get rid of us. And that was straight from the horse mouth. As for the memrobila, it was gone b4 the adminstrtor stepped in and I still know there is a bit around. I have had discussions with Darren Flanigan about co tennancy at Shepley and he is all for it. Still have to convince the council and Old Dandy West and Dandy Cricket Club.
