Rd 18: Werribee v Sandringham
I'll write a bit more later, but Reserves: SANDRINGHAM 10.13.73 WERRIBEE 11.6.72 Bees player Damien Fitzpatrick had a kick after the siren with the margin at two points but could only score a behind. Sandy held on to win by a point. Werribee's finals chances now on the line. Seniors: WERRIBEE 10.15.75 SANDRINGHAM 8.13.61 Heavy downpour at 3/4 time, Werribee played the better footy to run out winners. Bad day for Sandy, appears that Simon Godfrey was reported. Shaun Smith returned to the Werribee side, and led the side off the ground at the end. Given it was the Bees last home game I reckon he may have retired. But we will no doubt find out about that this week. More later...

RESERVES Werribee 5.2 7.3 9.4 11.6 (72) Sandringham 1.4 7.6 8.9 10.13 (73) Werribee Goals: Walsh 3, Carter 2, Fitzpatrick, Collins, Closter, Thompson, Whitten, Morrow. Best: Lyons, Hassett, Young, Collins, Wight. Sandringham Goals: Zantuck 4, Smith 3, Molan 2, Treloar. Best: Warnock, Paterakis, Hall, Zantuck, Kight, Smith. Very entertaining game of footy for most of the day, with Werribee taking a big lead before Sandy pegged it back during the 2nd term. Trent Zantuck with an incorrect jumper number on, must have been the player who kicked three second quarter goals. Given that Sandringham had a forward line of Nick Smith, Luke Molan and Dale Carson (all Melbourne listed) at stages, it was a difficult job for the Werribee defence. Lochlan Veale did a very good job on Dale Carson, while I think it was Adam Morrow and Damien Charleston who spent time on the other players and had good and bad patches. I see they named midfielders mostly as their best, and it would have been a tough day in the gluepot of Chirnside Park for them. For the Zebras, Matthew Warnock was really reliable in defence, hanging on to numerous solid marks, while fellow defender Luke Mann also did a good job down there. Nick Smith took some really strong marks, and should be pushing for a senior spot soon. Tom Paterakis was covered in mud, as was Kenton Hall - both players worked hard in and under. The third term was full of stoppages, but at least the game remained close. In the last quarter with Werribee up by a point, Iszac Thompson was given a 50m penalty and goal. Sandringham had the next four scoring shots - all behinds - before a Zebras goal, giving them a 3 point lead. Tim Walsh had a chance for Werribee and missed, then with a few seconds to go Damien Fitzpatrick, on the way back from long term injury, marked in the right forward pocket with the siren sounding as he went back to take the kick. On a tight angle he could only kick a behind - Sandringham hanging on to win by a point.

Excellent as per usual Footyman.. could I ask a couple of questions about Werribees twos? Did James Condos play? Since getting a spot on the Doggies list, his form has gone backwards. How did Dean Whitten go?

I see they put Dean Whitten in the best but to be honest I didn't notice him that much. I'll look for him next time to see how he plays. Yeah, James Condos did play reserves today. He played seniors last week against Springvale and spent a fair chunk of it on the bench. No doubt he's gone backwards this year, he was a very promising forward last year with 30 goals for the season out of about 15 games. They've tried to give him a run in the midfield, but I don't reckon he's up to it. And they also have a lot of other blokes who can go through the forward line. I've got down here that he was playing forward in the third quarter today and his opponent was Tim Kight. Kight has been named in the best for Sandy but I'm not sure if they were opponents all day. He'll be delisted which is a shame because someone like him coming out of WRFL to VFL and then AFL rookie is a good advertisement for different ways to get into the AFL system.
