Teams like Tasmania, North Ballarat and Bendigo have to travel to games in Melbourne all of the time
Not on a Friday night after earning the right to a home final they don't.

There is no structure under the rules of the VFL for teams to "earn" a home final. There is no merit based structure and all clubs know that regardless of where you finish, finals will be played on a best fit basis. Whilst the argument against Bendigo on a Friday night is sound for a whole lot of reasons, the fact they didn't finish highest is not one of them. To continue to argue on this basis simply dilutes the other VERY valid arguments.
That's where the problem lies, and I hope that this is the final time it has to happen. Port were penalised a couple of years ago with a trip to Tasmania that they should not have had. Even last year, Coburg finished above Box Hill, but Box Hill got the home final and ended up winning narrowly and the home crowd and home ground would have done that. So Coburg season over - what if they didnt have to go to Box Hill, what if they played at Coburg, perhaps they'd have won, then won a semi, made a Prelim, perhaps they'd have gotten more sponsors this year, perhaps they wouldn't be on the verge of death now. The finals are too important for the players, the fans, the sponsors, indeed the clubs to be seeing results go one way cos they get an advantage. How does someone feel when they work their ar*e off all season, or throw a fair of cash in the direction of a club and see that club get into 5th spot only to be bundled out by the 8th side who get a final at their home ground?? I'd be filthy if I was in that boat. Either home ground finals rights have to be based on a merit system (simply that should be 1st and 2nd ALWAYS get a home final in week one, and Elimination games are on TV from Port Melb), or simply the two first week finals that are a problem should be played at a neutral venue (eg. a few years ago Coburg v Frankston at Sandringham).
