There is a video on youtube (which won"t download) of the very high scoring Sandringham v Preston PF when Sandy came from 69 points down to nearly snatch the game with Rex Hunt in his final game of footy kicking 10 goals inc an incredible 7 straight in the last quarter!
that was when VFL played on a Saturday and VFA on a Sunday so everyone had a team they followed on both days and before the VFL/AFL started to monopolise the game in Victoria
Yes the rot started to set in with the VFL playing on Sundays in 1981 when Essendon played Collingwood played in the first match at the MCG and South Melbourne went to Sydney in 1982 and had their matches at the SCG telecast direct into Melbourne and VFL reserves matches televised live from the Lake Oval on the alternate Sundays!
As a result CH 10 ended their telecast of the VFA home and away matches. The ABC a started to telecast the VFA again from 1988.
Ahhh John Cain. The man who's legacy was to build the M1 extension to join Toorak Rd to Warrigal Rd and open it in 1988 but decided to put traffic lights on it.
When asked why it was so busy and a carpark his response was that everyone was using it to "have a look"........
no traffic lights now but its still a car park a lot of the time - his greater legacy was driving the State Bank of Victoria into the ground and eventually selling it off to the CBA

John Cain tried his hardest to stop the VFL encroachment on Sunday football but it was only a matter of time before the beast took over
