VFL Reserves
The rumour that Carlton may have only been granted a VFL reserves license if they stood alone this season got me thinking. The reserves competition has ten teams, playing in a 20 round season. If more teams were to come into the competition, who would they be, and where would they come from ? Could you bring country sides in as an experiment? I dont think metropolitan and country competitions would want a representative side fielded for an entire season. Thoughts?

The ressies comp will continue to have it's problems I guess , while not all sides field a team , but I dont know that I'm too keen on seeing hybrid teams included. Combined or representative sides seem to go against the whole concept of what the VFL is (or perhaps should be) trying to project , i.e a community based statewide comp. There's no doubt that the alignment of clubs with AFL sides has saved the VFL from slipping into obscurity but we still have a duty to avoid the league becoming ONLY a reserves comp for the AFL. We need to preserve CLUBS , not TEAMS. Yeah yeah , I know I'm a dinosaur....but I'm not quite extinct yet !!!

Do you think clubs like Bendigo should be fielding a side in the twos ? I would have thought it had more advantages for them than disadvantages.

Absolutely mate , I still cant fathom why they're trying to run with just one side. Surely the costs involved would be easily recouped , if not via the monolith that is Essendon FC , then through the creation of a genuine Bendigo VFL Club. I still think the VFL should have worked harder at attracting one of the powerful Bendigo clubs to make the transition rather than going down the representative track , but now that we're there I reckon we should be trying everything to help them survive and a ressies side must surely help in that. I just keep thinking , if it was Box Hill , I cant imagine how we'd create any sort of 'club' atmosphere when only half a dozen or so of the guys on the list are going to play in your colours each week....the rest go and play some where else. For a 'new' club striving desperately for local acceptance it just seems crazy to me.

Maybe they will re-assess it at a later date.
