g'day guys i found another ebay listing that sort of looks like a northcote jumper
Could this possibly be an old northcote jumper or just some random teams jumper?
Gordon football club in the Central Highlands League used to wear the same jumper as northcote.
The jumper in the e bay link is the same as their current jumper.
We might be from the bush. but we ain't green
He goes on talk of matches with Oakleigh, Camberwell and Northcote
The 1976 match mentioned in the book was Sunday 6 June, a cold and windy day. Northcote 16.16 112 vs Camberwell 21.17 143. Gary Hammond 9 goals 1 behind (70 goals so far for the season).
Just got my old style Northcote jumper the other day. I found it on eBay and the guy that sold it to me thought it was an original Dragons jumper from the 50's from when they switched to a gold vee for a couple of years. I'll post pictures soon...

Great result. Good to hear that these things are possible. I played for the Bayswater U11s (the kangaroos) and I'm fairly that their jumpers were also green with a yellow V. I used to jump on the train and go and watch the Mustangs play at Laburnum Oval. I thought they had the VFA's best jumpers, though the team was pretty dismal. Geelong West's jumpers were pretty cool as well.
To VFA(Northcote), is Northcote Park the same Northcote that was in the vfa? Last year I went to Northcote Park V Heidelberg for match of the round and I wasn't disappointed : sunny day, big crowd(vocal too) about 1500 and I sat in the big stand which gave an excellent view of the ground. Everything seemed intact from the vfa days - the old ticket booth, the social club/bar under the stand and scoreboard/clock which are all still used. People who live in those commission towers would have the best seat in the house!!
Brunswick's Gillon Oval looks nice too but it looks as though the stands have been fenced off which is a shame.. all the vfa grounds really need to be preserved and have the local leagues use them VFA as finals venues where all the facilities are either present or need minimal upgrades - I'm aware that Mordy, Caulfield, and Berwick do this. I can recall in the early 90s C grade ammo's held GFs at Camberwell with a few thousand attending - opposing supporters packed into each stand and the terraces where almost full.. and being a small ground there was alot of noise!
Northcote's last season was in the VFA in 1987.
Northcote Park is a seperate side and not connected.
They use to play in the old Panton Hill but joined the DVFL in the 1980s.
Northcote Park did win 4 straight flags in the lat 90s early 2000s.
The ground is an old relic as is most of the old VFA Grounds.
The Northcote scoreboard with team colours is the best and most colourful scoreboard going around. The flats in the background adds a bit of charachter to the ground.
I do have 2 tapes from Northcote v Oakleigh games in 1983 and 1987.
In the 1983 game Jimmy Christou and Buster Harland were running around for the dragons. The dragons lost by 9 points in this game due to inaccurate kicking.
Camberwell ground is now an unenclosed area, with the embankment along Bowen Street side and the 1972 metal scoreboard long gone. The old Tramway grandstand, when last seen, was well out of use with stairs removed. The "ditch" in front of the big grandstand was filled in ages ago.
Back on subject-- of the 36 Senior Victorian football clubs, Northcote was the only one with green in its colours.
Old VFA grounds
Northcote- Northcote Park use this ground. Still in good nick.
Camberwell- see Cobra Scorers comments. Famous scoreboard long gone and ground not enclosed.
Mordialloc- Still pretty much the same with Ben Kavanagh Reserve still used by the bloods in the SFL.
Yarraville- has had a facelift and probably better than its VFA days. Has anyone been to Yarraville Oval lately ? Ground used by Yarraville Seddon FC
Toorak Park- ground still pretty good. Used by old Xavs and Prahran Assumption FC in VAFA as well as the Prahran CC.
Caulfield Princes Park- Is this ground now not fenced ? Ground used by Caulfield who were an amalgamation of St Kevins Ormond and Glenhuntly ?
Shepley Oval- Still pretty good nick. Used for TAC Cup games.
Springvale Newcomen Reserve- Still the same and used by Springvale Districts.
Kilsyth Colchester Reserve- Home base for Eastern Ranges. Also back up ground for EFL and YVMDFL games when required. Better now than when Kilsyth played in VFA.
Geelong West Western Oval- Geelong West St Peters still paly here and Geelong West VFA have a reunion on Sunday July 29 coinciding with a game between Geelong West St Peters and I think it is St Josephs. Will check and post details later.
Oakleigh- not fenced and looks a far cry from VFA days.
Berwick Manuaka Road- Still the same and used by Berwick in MPNFL
Brunswick Gillon Oval- Not quite up to VFA standard these days. Grand old ground that I last visited 3 years ago to watch my old team Richmond Central play in a finals game in the VAFA.
Summing up best grounds from the above would currently be
Not in any order.
If there was a VFL game played at one of the old grounds where would you like to see it played ? If the ABC ever televised a VFL game at one of the old grounds where would you like to see it played ?

I cant split two grounds Toorak Park and Gillon Oval
I used to love going to those grounds although Sandy copped some hidings at both venues esp in the middle of winter when they both tended to churn up.
I also attended many Div 2 GFs at Toorak Park and was fortunate to be at Brunswick for the first Sunday game against Coburg where the ground was full and again when Mark Jackson was playing for the Wicks against Sandy and the ground was pretty full that day also.
The last televised game from Westgarth Street you would have to go back to 1975 against Sunshine which was the first in colour. Brunswick hosted Coburg in the late 80s when televised by the ABC. The last game televised at Toorak Park would have been Prahran v Oakleigh in 1994. Mordialloc was last televised at home in 1978 when it won the first two games for the season but was relegated.
Will have to check when Yarraville, Waverley, Caulfield and Camberwell last had a televised home game. I'm sure Cobra Scorer will know when Camberwell was last televised.
Berwick and Kilsyth have never been televised as both were only in second division.
Toorak Park always looked good on TV, especially when they had the crossover Second Division Finals. I was at the famous Mark Jackson game at Gillon Oval between Brunswick v Sandringham. Huge crowd that the vfl would kill for these days.
