I saw Frank Johnston play in the 54, 55 & 56 Grand finals. I can't 100% recall if he played in all three.

I add that Willy beat Port in all of those GF's
Wow, some of u guys on here make me feel young :-)

I think Channel 31 has some film of those GF's from the 1950's, would love to see Gerry the Monster in action ...

There are a couple of links on the net to Frank Johnson, www.fullpointsfooty.net states that he played in eight consecutive VFA grand finals with the Borough, albeit for just one win.

Billy...it was 1972 when Skilton and Barassi played their 1st games for Port...the game was at Sandy...huge crowd there..then a huge downpour at 1/2 time..it was John Scholes 1st game for Sandy as well...and my 1st game on the scoreboard...I remember going to the office at 1/2 time...Clem Dimsey was giving a match update over the phone...a mate and I had finished painting ZEBRAS on the grandstand roof the night before the game

Biggest crowd I have ever seen at Sandy
Didn't Skilton win or nearly win Port's B&F that year after playing about 8 games?may have done ok in the Liston also if my memory serves me correctly ...
Don't know if this is a very realiable source but I found this:
Did Skilton play just 1972 or 1973 as well?

http://wiki.fcmelbourne.com.au/Bob+Skilton

"A former playing coach of the Swans, Skilton beat out nine other candidates for the job after a year spent with Port Melbourne in the VFA where he won a best-and-fairest, and finished third in the Liston Medal playing just 11 games."
I think he just played the one season, 1972. On the Port website is a list of every player who has played at Port, it lists Skilton as playing just 11 games, but only records the year he first played, not the length of his career there. Some of the Port people on here would know for sure. Interestingly, Barrassi only played 3 games, but he would have been a fair age by then.

Bob Skilton played only the one season in 1972 for 11 games also I'm sure he won our best & fairest also.He polled well in the liston trophy and would have won it if he played more games.I also remeber Ron Barrassi playing them 3 games as well.

I supported South Melbourne as well Port Melbourne in my early days before South Melbourne relocated to Sydney and have seen Frank Johnson, Peter Bedford,Gary Brice,Shane McKew,Vic Aanensen,Norm Goss Jnr,Kevin Goss,Greg Dermott,Bernie Evans & the great Bob Skilton all play for Port Melbourne & South Melbourne at some time.

Go Borough! 2011
Crikey, you saw Frank Johnston play? He moved to South in 1960 at the age of 29 and won South's B&F in his first year beating the great Booby Skilton, pretty amazing story. I see him on the train occassionally, still looks in pretty good nick for an 80yo.

I'm also another South tragic, but i don't remember Greg Dermott playing there. Did he play seniors? You can also add Tony Haenan, Rod Carter, Peter Hall & Terry O'Niell to that list, just off the top of my head.
I must have thought that Greg Dermott played at South Melbourne but records show he didn't.I seen Frank Johnston play at South Melbourne as I would have been close to 6 years old when he played his last game at Port Melbourne in 1959 a bit young to remeber him at the Borough. Also I remeber Tony Haenen, Rod Carter,Peter Hall & Terry O'Neill coming from South play with Port.Another two players to add who played with Port and South is Stephen Allender & Syd Anderson.

Sorry about the date.It was the biggest crowd at Sandy est 15-17,000. The club had let it be known that BarryHooker Harrison was going to play on Barassi. When the rain came about half the crowd left.

Bobby

On second thoughts it could have been sweeter; if you and the current Bourgh Brigade had witnessed the one win out of eight. (seven losses)

1982 is also history
