Great game with top goal kicking by both teams. Sandy had their chances and even 10 goals by Rex Hunt was not good enough but Bullants just too good on the day. Good to see that game again after all those years ago remember feeling very sad after match as thought the Zebras with many good players had a real chance that season but had to wait another4 years to win 1985 flag.
Thanks Station Hotel for posting that game.

A genuine all time great finals match. Remember watching it with my Dad, he was going for Preston and I was wanting Sandy to win.
Zebra, i always thought that Sandy would have given Port more of a run than the Bullants in the GF, although Port was a very good team that year.

Yep one of Sandys traditional last quarter finishes unfortunately didnt win but had the Preston supporters shitting themselves.

The last quarter burst esp at TBO was my father told me from the Len Toyne days when he would urge his players on knowing they were very fit as he trained them Percy Ceritty style running up and down the cliffs behind Beach Oval.

Rex Hunts 10 goals was an amazing finish to a great VFL/VFA career.Hunt who was normally a bad shot at goal kicked 7 straight in the last qtr!

Considering Rex was playing one one leg due to a chronic hammy for most of the time at the Zebras makes his form at Sandy even greater.

I doubt we could have beaten Port in the GF as they were the best side of that era.

Amazing game with 54 goals kicked. I was behind the goals scoreboard end sitting in the old wooden stand. Sandringham came from the clouds to briefly hit the front but lost by 7 points.

From 1975 many VFA and VFL clubs wore colour shorts due to colour TV. Northcote wore green as well as gold. Oakleigh purple as well as gold. Dandenong red.

If I remember rightly, it was a similar scenario to 1977....Prelim Final....Sandy were miles in front of Coburg at 3/4 time.....Coburg kicked heaps in the last 1/4 but Sandy just got up...only to get flogged by 100 points in the Grand Final....

Similar thing happened to Preston...miles in front of Sandy...Sandy hit the lead but ended up losing...Preston went on to play Port Melbourne in the Grand Final only to get flogged by more than 100 points..

I remember taunting some Preston supporters after we got beaten that they would get thrashed in the GF.....didn't think it would eventuate the way it did...

Nobody would have got close to Port in 1981...

Found an interesting stat for season 1981

Brunswick 3rds kicked 77.44.506 to Geelong West 0.0.0

Bad kicking by Brunswick...44 points....

at an average of say 30 minutes per 1/4...Brunswick scored in nearly every minute of the game

Don't forget Williamstown thirds booted over 100 goals against the hapless Geelong West thirds with Stephen Cooke booting 46 goals. Good old Geelong West thirds. Actually in the early 70s they were a fair side but in later years they had monsterous scores klicked against them. Zebraman that is one game that I have never seen footage of the 1977 Premininary Final in 1st Division or the 1st Semi between Coburg v Brunswick. Anyone out there has any vision of those games ??
