The Werribee Football Club advises that the round two game between Werribee and Bendigo Gold will not be played at Avalon Airport Oval this Saturday.
The ground, in particular the centre wicket area, has been deemed by AFL Victoria and
The Werribee Football Club as unsuitable for play this weekend.
Werribee CEO Mark Penaluna expressed the club’s disappointment “The start of any season is filled with expectation and excitement and we were looking forward to hosting our first home game here on Saturday against Bendigo Gold.
Unfortunately with the Werribee Cricket Club Second X1 hosting the Grand Final, work on the ground to prepare it for football began later than normal, and it has not responded well enough to be in the appropriate condition to play this weekend.
We are disappointed for our players and coaches and for our supporters and sponsors.
We have had to cancel our President’s Lunch function which was organised with Victorian Sports Minister Damian Drum as guest speaker, and our first ever coach Brian Holcombe was coming from Bendigo with his wife to attend the game as part of the celebrations for our 50th year.
The game will now be played on Sunday at Highgate Recreational Reserve Craigieburn at 2pm.
Werribee will play its next home game on Saturday April 26th under lights at Avalon Airport Oval against the Northern Blues. Development League at 4pm with the Seniors at 7pm.
