JOHN Baird has one prestigious VFL medal to his name, the Norm Goss Medal as best-afield for the Box Hill Hawks in the 2001 grand final.

Another, higher honour might come his way next Monday.

The former Kangaroos player will go into the JJ Liston Trophy count at Moonee Valley as one of the favourites.

"Yeah, he'd have to be right up there. He's had a tremendous season," Port Melbourne coach Gary Ayres said.

Baird has spent most of his career in defence, but Ayres released him to the midfield this season and he averaged close to 30 possessions in the home-and-away rounds.
