Best: Damien, Magee, Edwards, Carlyle, Maggiore, Lagozzino, Crotty, Owen. Northern Bullants- Goals: Maslin 3, M. Mitchell 2, Saliba 2, Bakopoulos, Brown, Harrington. Best: Harmes, Bakopoulos, Williams, Saliba, Perryman, Shelton. Typical near end of season game with a few top ups on the ground. The Bullants even had to use ex-Blue Peter Dean. The Tigers came out of the blocks quickly to take a four goal lead into quarter time, and despite being outscored in the second quarter they still maintained a lead at the main break. Ruckman Warren Carlyle was dominating the hit outs, although the Tigers should have benefitted more than they did in the clearances. Nick Raines left the field for the Tigers with injury and didn’t return after half time. Matthew Brown celebrated a goal for the Bullants, but goal of the half went to a teammate - #54 who I guess was Bakopoulos. Coburg went into three quarter time with a 16 point lead, with Leigh Owen and Vin Randello playing well in the middle, Ryan Edwards off a forward flank, John Damien in defence keeping Peter Dean quiet, and Steve Daniher impressed with clean handling of the footy at ground level. Andrew Maggiore was also praised for a defensive role at ¾ time by Tigers coach Carl Steinfort. Richmond listed Kyle Archibald took a few solid marks during the second half but his foot skills let him down, but in the last term Maggiore went back into the centre and forwards such as James Magee, Sam Lagozzino, Alan Faraj and Dean Smith worked well. Tigers captain Faraj kicked the first goal of the quarter within a minute on his way back from injury, and Smith finished with two last quarter goals. Luke Maslin and David Saliba both goaled for the Bullants in the last term, but their 2.7 for the quarter proved costly as they weren’t able to close the gap on the lead set up by the Tigers earlier in the game. Final margin 16 points. Jason Harmes was named best on ground for the Bullants, with Rowan Williams playing a good game in defence. Both sides can still make the reserves finals, but need to win their remaining two matches: - For Coburg to make the finals, they need to beat Frankston on Saturday, and have Williamstown beat Werribee on Sunday. They must then beat Werribee in the last round. They also need the Bullants to lose one of their last two matches. - For the Bullants to make the finals, they also need to rely on Williamstown beating Werribee on Sunday, and will most likely need to beat both North Ballarat (4th) and Sandringham (2nd) to qualify. Best: Beasy, Vansittart, Zorzi, McCormick, Davies, Stevenson One of the heaviest downpours of the year hit during the second quarter, sending fans high up into what’s left of the City Oval Grandstand. It was just a real scrap of a game for most of the day. Zorzi and James goaled for the Bullants in the first term, with Ben Marsh registering the Tigers only goal. Bullants leading by 7 points at quarter time. The second quarter was a quarter of stoppages and goals were hard to get – although the Bullants managed two through free kicks inside their forward 50. Shane Tuck was able to kick one for the Tigers to keep them within two goals at the main break. Mark Coughlan was reported for striking Josh Vansittart. Players such as Steve Kenna, Sam Pleming and Brett Zorzi made up the Bullants forward line, with Coburg playing youngsters Brad Rayson and Rob Young down there, along with Dean Talbot and Leigh Carlson. Billy Nicholls played a decent half for the Tigers. Callan Beasy was effective for the Bullants. The third quarter wasn’t much better standard, with the Tigers able to add two goals and hold the Bullants goalless to take a slight lead into three quarter time. And they were able to keep the Bullants goalless again in the final term and kick four goals themselves to run out winners by 26 points. It was hardly the sort of game to get excited about, given the conditions and low scores. I was impressed with Billy Nicholls, although the Tigers named Ben Marsh as best on ground. For the Bullants, Callan Beasy and Josh Vansittart were named their best. The Tigers move into third spot and are on a winning roll with two ABC matches to come against Bendigo and Werribee, while the Bullants ruled out any small chance they had of playing finals with that loss.
