WILLIAMSTOWN might have been crowned minor premiers but it has drawn the shortest straw of all 16 clubs competing in this year's inaugural Champions League.

As revealed by Leader last month, the AFL has confirmed the Seagulls will travel to Perth to tackle Western Australia Football League powerhouse Swan Districts in Round 1 of the knockout competition dubbed the Foxtel Cup.

The April 9 clash at the newly named Patersons Stadium is a curtain-raiser to West Coast's AFL encounter with the Sydney Swans.

Williamstown was sent packing in last year's preliminary final and entered the tournament as the VFL's third-ranked side, behind premier North Ballarat and runner-up Northern Bullants.

WILLIAMSTOWN is bound for glory after claiming yet another minor premiership with an emphatic 94-point win over highly fancied Box Hill at Box Hill City Oval yesterday.

But it is September that will be the Seagulls' biggest hurdle after they were bundled out in straight sets last year.

NOT even skipper Brett Johnson was safe.

When Williamstown coach Peter German unloaded on his players in the three-quarter-time huddle against Coburg on Saturday, it was momentarily easy to forget that the Seagulls were 18 points to the good.

But German clearly hadn't liked what he saw in the third term as the Tigers previously goalless for almost 60 minutes booted four unanswered goals to draw within striking distance of Willi.

Western Bulldogs rookie Matt Panos wore a spray, and even captain Brett Johnson as reliable and constant as taxes copped a handful of choice words from a steely eyed German.

His words did the trick.

WILLIAMSTOWN today staged one of footballÂ’s great heists when it came from 45 points down to defeat western region rival Werribee at Point Gellibrand.

In a staggering comeback, the Seagulls slotted 11 goals to two in the final quarter to turn a 30-point deficit at the last change into a 26-point victory.
