CASEY Scorpions president John Sharkie says it is not a given that his club will strike an alignment deal with the City of Casey-bound Melbourne.

With St Kilda ditching the Scorpions last week to enter a five-year agreement with Sandringham, there is an expectation in VFL circles that Casey and the Demons will get together.

But Sharkie said it was not a fait accompli and that the Scorpions would be prepared to go it alone next season. He said he had already discussed with VFL bosses a financial assistance package if Casey went without an AFL affiliate.

Sharkie said Melbourne first had to find about $350,000 to seal a move to become a co-tenant at Casey Fields, and then commit to a joint community projects program. "Don\'t assume anything. It\'s not over the line by any stretch," Sharkie said. "We won\'t be rushed into anything. It all has to be done properly."

THE Casey Scorpions set up a tantalising match-of-the-round clash with third-placed Sandringham next Saturday with a 39-point win over Geelong at Casey Fields yesterday.

Casey had endured a tumultuous few days off the field last week when AFL-aligned partner St Kilda announced it would begin a five-year partnership with VFL rival Sandringham from next season.

But, the young playing group showed professionalism beyond its years on the field, dispatching a strong Cats side despite the late withdrawals of James Gwilt and Leigh Fisher, who had been promoted to St Kilda\'s senior team.

Dominant in the first half, Casey failed to convert forward 50 entries into goals and Geelong remained in the game thanks to the hard work of Kane Tenace and forward Ryan Gamble, who was proving a handful for young full-back Alex Silvagni.

A SEVEN-goal haul from young St Kilda listed player Matthew Ferguson helped the Casey Scorpions to an emphatic 118-point win over the Northern Bullants at Casey Fields.

The Scorpions dominated the midfield battle and held the Bullants to six goals for the match, including only one for the first half.

After the loss, Northern Bullants' playing coach David Teague said he had felt for his defenders, who were bombarded by exceptional delivery to the Casey forwards.

"We got beaten to the ball," he said. "They won the contested ball and they got the ball forward and put our defence under a lot of pressure. To be honest, I felt sorry for some of our defenders the way the ball was coming in.

THE famous G-Train, Fraser Gehrig, stopped in Hobart yesterday but had little to deliver.

The St Kilda spearhead, a dual Coleman medallist and the last player to kick 100 goals in an AFL season, was kept to just 0.1 for Casey Scorpions in their 19-point loss to Tasmania at Bellerive.

After being dropped from the seniors last round and rested from the VFL, Gehrig, 32, played his first game for Casey.

He had seven kicks, two marks and five handballs for the day, and was benched twice, with his sole shot on goal coming from a chase and tackle. Gehrig was rewarded with a free for the effort.

He played on, wheeled on to his left foot but missed.

Gehrig had three goal assists, but was well held by Devils full-back Brennan Savage.

CASEY Scorpions will start Round 5 of the VFL with a hit-and-run mission against Tasmania at Bellerive Oval today.

Casey will welcome back captain Kyle Matthews from a knee injury, and St Kilda spearhead Fraser Gehrig, who was named at full-forward.

The Scorpions flew into Hobart last night and will return after today's match.

"It is a big challenge for us," Scorpions coach Greg Hutchison said yesterday.

"We are coming off a five-day break and two sets of travel. It is a difficult task."

The Scorpions, third on the ladder after three consecutive wins, face a Tasmania side looking to continue its perfect record at home this season.

ST KILDA'S man-mountain Fraser Gehrig is expected to spearhead the Casey Scorpions' attack against the Tasmanian Devils in their VFL Anzac Day clash at Bellerive.

The 2004 and 2005 Coleman Medallist and the last AFL player to kick 100 goals in a season was dropped from last week's St Kilda team that defeated Essendon after kicking just seven goals in three games.

Gehrig was named in the St Kilda-aligned Scorpions side that takes on the Devils today after his name did not appear in the Saints' line-up to play Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium tomorrow night.

Scorpions coach Greg Hutchison said yesterday Gehrig was in the mix to play in Hobart.

"We are waiting for St Kilda to decide their needs for this weekend, and then we'll know more about which players are available to us," Hutchison said before Gehrig was named in the Scorpions forward line.

Picture: Stewart Chambers.JUST over a month after Peter Banfield’s controversial departure, the Casey Scorpions have announced former Melbourne utility Greg Hutchison as their new senior head coach.

The appointment was confirmed on Tuesday after a procession of coaches had been interviewed.

Former St Kilda star and two-time Narre Warren premiership coach Austinn Jones was notified on Monday that he had not been offered the job.

Jones is now a prime candidate for the vacant Gippsland Power TAC Cup coaching post.

Hutchison, 50, played 96 games and kicked 21 goals for the Demons from 1975-84, and also had a 13-game stint as caretaker coach of the club in 1997 after Neil Balme was sacked.

He has been involved in a variety of roles as an assistant coach at Australian Football League (AFL) level with Richmond and the Kangaroos since 1999.

In the first of a big double-header Round 17 VFL weekend on 3SER 97.7FM Casey Radio, Casey Scorpions have continued their late run to the finals by defeating Port Melbourne by 39 points at TEAC Oval on Saturday.

In a stunning performance, the Scorpions could only manage 12 straight behinds in the first half, before finding their kicking boots and consigning Port Melbourne to their fifth lost in their past six games. Conversely, Casey have now five of their past six.

Despite Casey's early kicking woes, conditions at TEAC Oval were quite good for football. The sky was overcast, but no rain came, and the wind favouring the Williamstown Road end was not that strong, worth only one-to-two goals.

The crowd figure at TEAC Oval was quite poor, numbering only approximately 700-800, and with AFL Victoria chief Peter Schwab in attendance, he will be wondering how he can improve on those sort of numbers.

The toss was won by stand-in Scorpions captain Troy Makepeace, who elected to kick with the slight breeze going towards the Williamstown Road end.
