Northern Territory Thunder into the VFL in 2020?

There are rumours circulating in footy circles about the possible inclusion of NT Thunder into the VFL as early as next year, ahead of Tasmania Devils reinclusion into the competition in 2021.

What are your thoughts on this issue?

I do like the idea of a mid-season trip up to the warmth of Darwin and Alice Springs!

I'm all for it - put the icing on the cake as the VFL being the premier competition outside the AFL. Id love to go to N.T. to watch Port - never been there and would love to get away from the cold. Probably only do it every once in a while however Tassie id like to go yearly when they get in.

I'm with you blokes, would love to see it, I used to enjoy going down to Tassie to watch The Towners, even in the depths of winter

The AFL would need to invest heavily in them to be competitive, the Thunder are currently clear last in the NEAFL, which is well below the level of the VFL.

Whats the idea of having them in the VFL anyway ? They are already playing in a competition taht you would think is alot easier logistically and financially for them.

Possibly cost saving as the NT women's team is in VFLW perhaps?

Sounds unlikey to me, and cant imagine the AFL investing too much money into this to make it happen.

Not up to scratch

Welcome to the forum Brendan.

Agree that they may not be up to the level yet at VFL lrvrl but can imagine that Victorian sides playing up there might be strongly impacted by the heat.

Funding would be the other issue but I'd expect the AFL would have no issue finding the $$$ despite not being able to find the cash to run the development league. I can imagine that some delisted afl players might seriously consider the option of playing for NT Thunder given the warmer climate and still being looked at closely by recruiters.

I'd much rather see money put into the Bendigo and Ballarat areas to try and re-establish those pathway clubs in country Victoria, but think that the money is probably not where the AFL HQ wants the future direction of the AFL to expand into.

As Donny Dump would say, this sounds like fake news to me. Why would they want to join the VFL when they can’t beat anyone in their own league? attracting quality players would be near on impossible. Why would any players want to relocate to Darwin for the crap money they get in the VFL? I remember Digs saying Nth Ballarat couldn’t get players willing to travel to Ballarat ..
