CASEY Scorpions VFL captain Kyle Matthews is in intensive care at The Alfred hospital after he was punched outside a Hawthorn hotel last night.

Matthews, 24, suffered a slight skull fracture and swelling of the brain after the incident outside the Geebung Polo Club in Auburn Rd.

He fell on to the road, with a witness describing the sound as “like a coconut hitting the ground’’.

Former Casey football manager Craig Lees, who visited Matthews in hospital today, said: “He’s a very sick boy, but at least he’s still with us. He’s alive, that’s the main thing.”

Matthews was out with some Scorpions teammates watching a telecast of former Casey defender Alex Silvagni making his debut for the Fremantle Dockers in the AFL.

Matthews and his girlfriend left when the match finished. But he returned to help a teammate who called to say he’d become involved in a fight.

Casey coach Bradley Gotch said he believed Matthews was knocked unconscious soon after he returned to the hotel.
