Port Melbourne scoreboard upgrade.

Old faithful is all set for a massive modernisation.

I believe the new video scoreboard will be ready for the start of the season.

Way back in the early 1960s I scored for several VFA finals on the open scoreboard at Toorak Park which preceded the manual one shown in these photos. (Fred Hill was a persuasive gentleman. He even got me doing the south end gate for some finals.) I got home after scoring for one of finals and was surprised to see myself on the tv news, complete with tennis shade to enable me to see the game! Oh, that tv would give VFL results now.

Even more off topic -- some of the excuses patrons tried to get in free were imaginative, but didn't succeed with me!

I reckon the time has come for all VFL grounds to have "electronic" scoreboards, BUT there must be a back-up scoreboard to stop the no scoreboard at all situation as occured at Casey Fields last season.

State your best excuses that people used for free admitance. I remember once Kevin Muscat didn;t want to pay st Port Melbourne Soccer club and he's excuse / reason was - "I'm Kevin Muscat, BUT I'M KEVIN MUSCAT" lol classic!

37 times Grand finalists
16 times premiers
21 times runners up - THE MIGHTY BOROUGH!

I'M PORT MELBURNE BORN,
I'M PORT MELBOURNE BRED,
I'LL BE PORT UNTIL I'M DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now we need the Prahran Football Club back too George. :-)

Having the two blues back would be great. Would look different today with the new scoreboard flashing at you.
Toorak Park did pack out those 2nd Division Grand Finals and sure had great atmosphere. Would be great to post all VFA scoreboards from days gone past. I think we have footage from all VFA grounds with the exception of Berwick and Yarraville, although I do have footage of those grounds but not VFA games. Station Hotel can you grab still shots from the footage of each of the grounds. I don't have Gillon Oval footage that shows pre electric scoreboard days though.
The website that is dediacted to the old scoreboards is a ripper. Good photo showing the Point Gellibrand scoreboard with Williamstown v Caulfied score on it. Photo would be from either 1974 or 75. More likely 1974.

The original scoreboard at Sandringham was where the Social Club is now in the days (pre 1974) there was quite a large hill at the Hampton end of Beach Road oval in fact

Sandys ground was well built up all around - a bit like Brunswick and Toorak Park but some nark complained to the local council that it was dangerous so they leveled all the embankments right down.

You could actually see where the height of the embankments for years on the old concrete fence which sadly has now gone to god.

The current scoreboard on the beach Road side of the ground was originally paid for
by a tobacco company as part of a sponsership deal.

Hi Cobrascorer I also knew Fred hill quite well ans remember going to see him at the old VFA offices at the VCA building on Flinders Street when I was about 16.

I reckon I only missed a coupe of 2nd Div GFs at Toorak Park and yes their were some great crowds back in those days.

I was also there the the day about $6000.00 of gate takings went missing from the Prahran secs office it was kept quiet and the money was never recovered

I think it might have been near the end of Freds long reign as VFA Sec and I know he was really shocked and upset when it happened.

Fred along with Pres Alec Gillon were the main people behind breaking the permit agreement with the VFL in the 1960s so VFA teams could take players from the VFL without a clearance, Sunday Football and 16 a side.
He also was a great supporter of the thirds/under 19 comp.

Some scoreboards are landmarks and are part of a grounds character.
Arden Street scoreboard in the 70s stood out in that era. Junction oval was a good scoreboard especially for those VFA finals. Windy Hill and Vic Park were very similar.
Northcote has a great scoreboard by having the teams names in club colours. Very colurful scoreboard and easy to read.
It would be discraceful if the MCG scoreboard got ever bulldozed. Thank god that it was moved to Manuka Oval. The scoreboards at Adelaide Oval, WACA and the old SCG are good ones and should be heritage listed. I did not mind Princes Park's scoreboard before they built that stupid legends stand.

Billy, what are your top three scoreboards of all time plus what are the worst you have seen ?

VFA scoreboards would be Yarraville,Toorak Park and Sandys old scoreboard mentions to
Camberwell, Oakleigh and Caulfield the worst would be both electronic Brunswick and now Williamstowns pathetic little effort.

The Junctions was big but it was basically a cricket scoreboard so the numbers for footy were way to small.
The Junction Oval was a VFA ground for one season when Sandringham shifted there in 1966.

Not overly interested in the electronic scoreboards, and underwhelmed by Willy's. Northcote was the best because they had the teams in their colours.
