By BRETT STUBBS 15jan06 A DEVIL on the footy field, Ben Beams can also wield the bat like a demon. Yesterday the Tassie Devils VFL captain smashed an incredible 311 for Wellington off only 120 balls in a Southern Tasmania Cricket League one-day game. Captain also of the cricket XI, Beams opened the batting and then struck a mighty 31 fours and 17 sixes -- 226 runs in boundaries -- as his team amassed 4-549 off its 50 overs against a hapless Derwent team at Eady St. To top off the day, Derwent was dismissed for 59, giving Wellington a massive 490-run victory. And all of this after Beams undertook pre-season training with the Devils in the morning. "I'm pretty stuffed as we had footy training at 7am down at Seven Mile Beach -- a couple of hours of bike riding and running," Beams, 27, said. "But I don't know what happened today. I got a bit lucky; slogged a few. "It was a nice flat deck, a nice day and the ball just came off the bat a bit better." Beams, a former player with AFL club Melbourne, said he had only been averaging 30 with the bat before yesterday and had only scored two centuries previously. And now he's got his winter teammates -- including coach Mathew Armstrong -- in his sights. "We've got a game against the Devils on Australia Day, a 24-over game, which should be a good day," he said. "Nick Paine is captain of the Devils' side. I might play for Wellington as I've got a bit of local knowledge and I've got myself into some form now." Not surprisingly, Wellington sits on top of the STCL ladder. "It's just a great club to be around, and I'm just lucky we have got a really good side," Beams said. "We've won the last three flags and shooting for four in a row, touch wood." [/quote]
