Rnd 18 - Port V Devils
Body:
Port handed out the Devils a 20 goal belting, finishing the game with 29.19.(193) to 9.7.(61). Tasmania went into the game undermanned, after losing a couple to injury and Port lost Steven Lawrence for this game. Scott Howard came into Ports side for his senior debut. As the scores indicate, the game was pretty one-side. Tasmania kicked the first two goals of the game, but Port got back into the game to lead at quarter time 8.2 to 3.0. Jeremy Clayton was in brilliant form, kicking 3 goals early. The game continued to be lopsided, scoring 15.8 to 3.3 to half-time. The third quarter became a heated during stages with the Schwarze / Drury matchup creating some raised tensions. Tasmania kicked as many goals in the third as they had to half-time, but still trailed 23.14 to 6.5. With the result beyond doubt, the game finished with a 132 point win, which would have severely knocked the Devils confidence in the lead-up to the Finals. For Port, Jeremy Clayton finished with a 7 goal haul. Forwards David Pitt and Nick Gill kicked 5 and 4 goals respectively. Postives for the Borough were the solid debut from Scott Howard. Jeremy Clayton was brililant and is one of the most exciting players going around in the VFL. Nick Gill after being wayward early finished off with 4 goals, and led strongly a took a couple of great grabs. Josh Gibson had some great run out of defence, his running back into packs and attack on the ball were terrific. In the reserves, Williamstown were convincing winners over Port, finishing approximately 114 to 66. Williamstown's senior side had the bye, but I was unable to check if the Towners had many of their senior regular players in the side. Adrian Newman kicked his 50th Goal for the season for the Borough's in a game that Port stuggled to match Williamstown. After the game in the social rooms, Matthew Armstrong praised Ports effort, and said that going to the ground this morning, he considered the Devils a real chance to sneak away with the game.
