It's not a priority at all for the AFL. Expect the AFLW to morph into more curtain raisers / curtain closers to the AFL.

But the AFLW don't want to be seen as subservient to the men's game by playing curtain-raisers. They want to be a stand-alone competition.

The main demand is for a full season, and when that happens there will be significant overlap with the AFL season, and that will result in double headers due to broadcast requirements.

Wont be happening. Can you see West Coast or Fremantle reserves travelling all over the countryside. No chance.

I hope it does happen.  the AFL will then jettison the non AFL teams and that will force those clubs into different competition(s)

No disrespect to the WRFL, but i don't particularly want to see Willi going around in that competition but if there is nowhere else to go then that may be the unavoidable alternative

It would be a very expensive exercise transporting the AFL Seconds teams all around the country and accommodating them at times

How would you feel about the VFA and SANFL combining?

That would be a genuine 17 team competition.

* It's time to restore the VFA name.

Interesting concept but once again, who would foot the bill for all the travel involved? Might be 18 teams if there is a Tasmanian team involved also

I would not mind a combined SANFL/VFL comp.

But my money will be the same as we got now with 22 teams once Tassie joins.

The AFL just signed a. $4.6  BILLION TV contract so money won't be a problem and I do see it happening sooner rather than later and the reserves can easily travel with the senior teams as happens already..

Then it will be very interesting to see what happens to the abandoned ex  VFA teams who really are of no consequence  to the AFL or its clubs and supporters. If the AFL clubs want this it will happen.

The ex VFA clubs plus a couple of other strong suburban clubs could  form their own 10 team comp.

The AFL has committed the money from the broadcast deal in their future planning, and second tier footy isn't on the priorities list from what I've heard, although these things can change. Increased player payments, women's footy and community footy are some of the higher priorities.

I think we'll see a full AFLW season with some alignment with the AFL season (as this is what clubs want) well before any major second tier changes. At the moment, second tier footy is delivering plenty of draftees and providing competitive footy, and those are the boxes it needs to tick.

I think I like Billys suggestion,  sounds like the most realistic, affordable option which would appease the stand alone clubs. If / when the inevitable happens form another comp, yould only need a few extra clubs.

I don't like the idea of having these sides play in their local comp, could you imagine Williamstown and Werribee playing in the WRFL, it'll be like Rangers and Celtic, one of the two will dominate the competition or Port Melbourne playing in the Southern league, thrll win it without a struggle and they'd be plenty of lopsided scores, as well as crowds, sponsorship and media (albeit it's minor) attention dropping.

If playing local was to happen it wouldn't have any appeal for me, I wouldn't be back and I feel like I wouldn't be the only one.

Port Melbourne, Williamstown, Werribee, Coburg, Preston, Frankston......invite Box Hill and Sandy, or add two teams from the east by invitation - might be Noble Park and Vermont for example. That covers metro Melbourne, then invite four country regions to field a team - probably from Bendigo, Ballarat, Ovens & Murray and Hampden leagues. Twelve team comp, undoubtedly competitive, and a sustainable state league comp is reborn in Victoria.

This mutated competition we have now is frankly an insult to the heartland of footy.

Last year's premiers might be a bit miffed that they haven't been included

Wally, given that Sandy and Box Hill are barely scraping in with what little identity they have left, Casey have absolutely no claim. I work in that area often and have never met anybody who follows them nor cares about their fortunes. And they long since dismissed their Springvale Scorpions origins. Melbourne seconds and nothing more mate.

Yes i think so aj, they have gone from Springvale, to Springvale Scorpions then Casey Scorpions and now Casey Demons and changed their jumper so many times that they have lost all identity - apart from Melbourne supporters nobody would care about them

Just watched some of the St Kilda seconds/Sandy v Brisbane match on line and I have to say it would have to be one of the worst crowds in living memory for a senior match at the Beach Oval!

Looked like its down to friends and relos of the players and a handful of Saints fans!

You wonder how the current board can justify this destruction of the once strong and proud Sandringham Football Club?

It's always mystified me (well, not really) why the alignment with Melbourne seemed to work quite well for Sandy but the moment they got involved with St Kilda it all turned to crap for them - i guess if you lay down with dogs, etc etc
