Really keen for the Port game on the 24th. Port are likely to be a much improved team this year so I think they'll be good opposition for our guys to go up against. Although I doubt Port are all that thrilled to be travelling to Frankston three times (we've got you guys at Kars St early in the season apparently) in such a short period.

Frankston's practice match schedule below:

Frankston defeat Port 10.5.65 to 3.6.24 today

Fairly happy with the result. Not getting too hyped yet since Port weren't great opposition today, but the ball movement was excellent. Milne, Owens, Grey, Peckett all showing promise.

Frankston looked very good over all four quarters and thoroughly beat an albeit undermanned Port side.

It was a very healthy crowd too.. Possibly assisted by hosting Polling booths at the ground.

Great photos.

I imagine scheduling of the practice match alongside the market across the street and while the early voting centre was open was a deliberate choice in the hope of enticing people to wander in casually. Although I'd have preferred if the polling place was located upstairs in the function room rather than causing congestion near the main gate.

I did start to hear some familiar voices on the hill near the end of the game. Wonder if they got there late or decided to keep quiet for half the game.

Just a note on today's game, Frankston were without a number of top liners too. Mynott, Voss, Connor Riley, Murphy, Nayna and Roberts were all missing. So I'm quietly pleased with the comprehensive win, given that it was done with largely a bunch of new kids. A few things to note for the Dolphs out of today.....

Lochie Reidy was superb in the middle and has definitely filled out over the off season - will be a player to watch.

Angus Grant was excellent in the ruck and crashing the marking packs today. Another who looks ready to step up.

Justin Davies and Trent Marotta - two big units filled the full forward line today and look very dangerous as a dual threat. This allowed Josh Butland to play across half forward and he looked very comfortable getting it forward.

Jet Peckett looks as brave as his old man.....throwing himself backwards into packs and making impossible spoils.

Tyson Milne has definite talent, but is a showman like his old man. Will frustrate but could be a match winner too.

Noah Gown was out today as well and yet our forward line functioned quite well. Keen to see what it looks like once he's in there.

For those going to the practice games tomorrow at Kinetic Stadum who may not be aware that Frankston is in the Dunkley electorate. There will be a polling booth at the footy ground tomorrow which will make parking impossible. Allow plenty of time and be prepared for a decent walk from your car to the ground.

I'm not sure that the voting booth will be running on Saturday. It's an early voting centre and the by-election is on Saturday. It's not listed under the election day sites but I'll try to get an answer at the club tonight just to confirm.

I'd say you're right. The footy ground is not listed on the Gov, website for polling places on election day. Thank Christ for that!

Hopefully they actually pack the thing up tonight instead of waiting until tomorrow or leaving the bar closed. Parking is going to be a royal pain as it is with five other clubs and their supporters sharing the place.

I don't imagine too many Preston or Coburg fans will make their way down.....or Werribee either. I expect it will be a fairly small crowd if the Port and Willy supporters leave after their game.

Managed to get here early for Port and Willy. Should be an interesting game.

Not sure we'll be getting a great crowd today. The parking space is pretty much full already and there's hardly any crowd.

Willy by a couple of points over Port. Port led from the start to the last two minutes and though never much in it had looked in control. Willy pinched this one.
Frankston trail Preston 1.2 to 5.1 at quarter time. Rude awakening!

Ordinary result for Frankston today. While there were moments where our ball movement looked good, the execution wasn't anywhere near consistent enough. And the less said about the goalkicking, the better.

Lesson in complacency. If you don't turn up with intent from the opening bounce, you'll get punished even by a team that - on paper - is weaker than you. Hopefully they take that lesson to heart next week. Williamstown will be harder than either of these matches.

People are talking North Melbourne up as an improver this year in the AFL. It will be interesting to see if that translates to a stronger VFL performance.

Regarding the Dolphins loss on the weekend. That was a real surprise. I rate the unique shape of Karr St as one of the biggest home ground advantages in the comp. Did Preston look to be a vastly improved side, or were Frankston just off the boil, or undermanned?

The Borough had a big boost in talent this week, so I was expecting a much more competitive performance against Willy.

The Port Girls had another good win and I feel that we might be in for another strong season. (hopefully a repeat of 2023!).

We had a few more of our experienced players in this time. I honestly chalk it up to complacency from our boys. I think the previous week's win against an undermanned Port side might have made them a bit overconfident, and they expected the Bullants to just roll over. Jackson Kornberg roasted them at quarter time over the way they set up - moving ahead of the ball prematurely expecting they were going to win every contest, only to be caught out of position when that didn't go our way. After quarter time we dominated large stretches of the game, but were let down by a panicked long bomb inside 50 or a shanked kick at goal. The Bullants weren't particularly good, just harder at the ball than we were especially in that first quarter.

I think it came down to our guys being overconfident, then cracking under the pressure of having to fight our way into the game after the first quarter. Hopefully it's a learning experience for them. We've got Williamstown on Friday night, and again two weeks later for Round 1. Both will be important games.

Willy beat Frankston by about 5 goals. Their ball movement was way better than ours with the wind, that’s what it came down to. Was a high pressure hitout, sometimes spiteful due to players’ frustration at shocking inconsistent umpiring.

Collingwood v Port Melbourne today saw a much improved Borough side run out winners 10.11.71 to 7.9.51.

Port moved the ball very well across the ground and mature bodies such as McComb, Gowers and Smith along with Hooper really imposed themselves across the midfield, and Port's height with Hoffert, Flockart looking good too.

There is a lot to like about Port at this early stage. But if we play anything like we did today against the Pies, we will be in for a good Rd 1 clash against Southport.

Agree with your comments and after seeing Port for the first time yesterday I feel greater optimism. Additional to what you mentioned I also liked Ports hard and tough tackling,. Unlike last years side I very much doubt anybody will label this bunch as "intimidating as a warm cup of milk"!

What I didn't like and I think could be a area of concern was at times Collingwood transitioned defence to attack without much difficulty and appeared too string together several uncontested passes.

Having said that and without doing research on Southport I feel mildly confident about round 1.

so the Port boys have to work while the Collingwood AFL-listed players can rest up and you beat them, easily, although only 'match sim' it's still nice to knock off an AFL club

Yeah Anastasio said that exact same thing to one of our fans, that he had to leave work early. Might be ok in this day and age where workplace flexibility is almost a requirement but still doesn't discount the fact that depending on the job players may be mentally exhausted (as well as physically).

If God had blessed me with football talent I reckon ild take the whole day off.

yeah we played Essendon in a Friday night game last year and beat them fairly easily also - i seem to recall that Frankston played Geelong at Kardinia Park on a Friday night last year which would be a much tougher assignment and I think they lost but not by a huge margin so it's not impossible to knock them off

We lost to Geelong by two points. Really a game we should have won but not the first time a poor start let us down.

Friday night at Kardinia is a terrible timeslot for a semi-pro team. I was lucky enough to get off work early enough to shower and change before we had to head off. Thankfully we're travelling there on a Sunday afternoon this year which is a far better timeslot.

Blimey, was it that close? That's disgraceful that a stand-alone team should be sent to the other side of the bay on a working day but that's the world we live in, unfortunately - hopefully a stand-alone will win the flag this coming season

A very basic question and one I feel i should know but am i correct in saying that the non AFL listed players at AFL clubs only train part time and most would have jobs ?

yes, i would think so, they are only top-ups or supplementary players so not contracted - they would have a job elsewhere presumably and if concussed they would be out for 21 days unlike the AFL-listed players who only are out for 12 days
