So the ads were going through too frequently. They were supposed to pop up once every now and then.
(They pay for the costs of hosting the site). Normally I just have the odd box on the side displaying ad locations I choose, but by default Google had enabled 'auto-ads' where it chose different ad locations, including the pop-up one that you seem to have been bombarded with Bearsman.
I'm definitely not getting that, I'll let David know now.
