AFL Tas Threatens to fold Devils
AFL Tasmania says it is prepared to dump the Tasmanian Devils to ensure a state football league is successfully revived in Tasmania.
http://www.news.com.au/mercury/story/0,22884,24087836-13222,00.html Not sure what this will do to the Devils players. They have already gone through enough turmoil this year and now to hear that they are dispensable to their governing body will surely put moralle at a further low

:D Keep Tassie in the VFL as I am sure all Sandy players and supporters want. Albeit we had 2 good victories over them this season but we lost one last year and they still push teams most weeks. As to the trip to Tassie each year is terrific and am sure many Victorians get their first chance to see what that great state and football team has to offer. Go zebs zebra

one of the highlights of the VFA season is the trip to Tassie....either Launceston or Hobart...both are great venues

Sandy. The most successful club in the past 30 years

If the Devils are folded there is no point for Tasmania to pursue an AFL team. They need the Devils in the VFL otherwise Tasmanian Football will go no where.

Tasmania would still have their U/18 team at the National Champs, but their marked improvement is through young players gettinga chance at VFL level then representing Tassie. Taking away the VFL side will only hinder Tasmania's progress, especially of their young kids. It's just AFL Tasmania crying out for publicity and showing desperation for their casue, I admire their efforts.

Personally, I disagree with some of the above rationale. The Devils are not (AND SHOULD NOT) be merely some avenue for kids to get drafted by other teams in another league we aren't a part of. The numbers will show far more kids drafted through the U18 programme over the last 8 seasons, not the Devils, and a rise in Devils draftees last year was because of this new direction - which, we all know, came at the expense of onfield performance. Quite simply, the draftees should come from the U18's in the TAC, restored to full status and be fed by a statewide underage comp. The senior statewide comp as planned should be scrapped, and the North and South leagues should just focus on thumping each other (especially around finals time for a fair dinkum and not just token State Premiership). The best players in this set up should be the recruits for the Devils, and alongside a few marquee players, the team should concentrate on the only function fit for a Tasmanian representative side - smashing mainlanders on a weekly basis! We did this in the first 3-4 years...why not now...? I can't see how you can justify a SW league on the basis that it will produce a few AFL draftees...the cost is a rep side, half of Tassie's senior clubs and their rivalries, interest and support from the public, and a fair bit of the money we've just got from the AFL...and in any case, once you've passed Mariners eligibility, you're usually too old for the AFL draft anyway...stats will show that you usually don't get drafted once you hit 20... I'm just concerned that Tasmanian footy will be relegated to dogsbody feeder status (the AFL is doing this on purpose, and AFL Tas is just allowing themselves to be bent over the table while telling everybody they like being in this position)...yeah, sure, it's been like that for years, but we've always wanted to BE members of the top level, not suck the members of those who already are...

Could be a deliberate plot by the afl scum to demolish the devils. Then the afl can say Tassie is a flop and sell the West Sydney/Gold Coast crap. Tassie is a footy state where West Sydney and Gold Coast are not and never will (THEY ARE RUGBY STATES) where the apple isle is footy mad. AFL scum wants to spend millions in west Sydney and do they give a hoot about Tassie ? Nothing wrong with the current Tassie Devils. They have done ok and produced quite a few players that have gone to afl level from the Devils. Leave the current Tassie devils alone !!!! The afl will put a gold coast team in the vfl so they can get ready for the afl but they want to dismantle the devils ?

AFL Tas is OWNED by the AFL who don't want a Tassie team and have probably told them to destabilise football in the State by any means, which is why they are pushing the Statewide crap and coming out with ever changing statements like this one.

Well AFL Tas did say right from the start from this new push for an AFL team that they were against it. Shows how far up the arse Scott Wade and co will do to please the Grand Poobah Demetriou. If they really cared about Tasmanian football all of the stooges at AFL Tas would leave at let people who are passionate and care about Tasmanian football run the game instead of pandering to the AFL.

what about the deal that had the devils tied into the VFL for 5 years?? By the way, I reckon that Tamanian state football should all be geared around getting the best players to play for the devils, giving kids something to aspire to, make the Mariners and Devils one club and build an absoloute force down there. Somethings too fishy about this, and it's hard not to belive Demetriou doesn't have a finger on a string.

If the Devils were to fold would AFL Tas have to cough up money to the VFL for not honouring the agreement? I agree with Iceman that Tassie football needs to built around the Devils with every thing done to get the top local footballers playing with the Devils as at the moment I would say at least there's about dozen or so players about who would improve the team. Also having the Devils succeeding is probably the best and perhaps the only way that we can press our games for an AFL team.
