Boroughs' power has a price

PORT Melbourne coach Gary Ayres has not spoken to Greater Western Sydney about drafting his star players, but expects a handful to graduate to AFL lists.

The Boroughs are undefeated and VFL premiership favourites, and Ayres expects his side's dominance to launch at least three AFL careers, as North Ballarat's flag did last year.

Giants coach Kevin Sheedy, who worked with Ayres for two years at Essendon, has been seen at several Port Melbourne games this season.

"I haven't spoken to Kevin yet, but I'm more than happy to take his call to talk about my players," Ayres said.

The Giants are circling former Western Bulldogs speedster Malcolm Lynch and Nathan Batsanis, the nephew of Peter Daicos.

The Giants are one of several AFL clubs to make inquiries about ball magnet Sam Dwyer since his 28-disposal, best-afield performance against Williamstown in Round 20.

Dwyer, who won the VFL reserves league medal in 2007, is a $5 favourite to win the Liston Trophy and has earned a late call-up to this year's state draft screening.

"The pool of players is only going to get smaller with these new franchises coming in, and so you'd think these players would be seriously looked at," Ayres said.

"Dwyer didn't play much last year because of a knee complaint, but he's back to his best. We'd like to think we're better placed now to have guys picked up and it would be (similar to North Ballarat)."

GWS plucked last year's joint Liston winner Stevie Clifton from the Roosters in the rookie draft.

The Boroughs host Casey today in a qualifying final and will start hot favourites.

Premiership ruckman Robbie Campbell is in doubt, while Ayres said Jarrod Dalton would go to buzz player Brendan Fevola.

The Roosters could be without their North Melbourne players against Williamstown tomorrow.
