Len Thompson- sad news

As quoted form the Herald Sun COLLINGWOOD ruck legend Len Thompson died of a heart attack at home today, three weeks after his 60th birthday. Early reports suggest he fell at home, at the time of his shock death. The winner of the 1972 Brownlow Medal and five Copeland Trophies, he was a member of Collingwood's Team of the Century. The Magpies recruited the 200cm Thompson from North Reservoir and he went on to play 268 games for the club in a career at Victoria Park between 1965 and 1978. He later played 20 games for South Melbourne and 13 for Fitzroy. ----------------------- Len Thompson did coach Preston in the late 1980s. He was a frequest visitor to vfl matches watching williamstown or Port Melbourne at most games.

TO ANY ONE INTERESTED I HAVE COPIES OF THE 83 AND 84 VFA BACK TO BACK PRESTON GRAND FINALS WHICH I AM CURRENTLY GETTING TRANSFERED ONTO DVD. I AM INTERESTED IN GETTING MY HANDS ON ANY VFA FOOTAGE FROM THE 80'S, I ALSO HAVE A COPY OF THE 1982 VFA GRAND FINAL RECORD AND MOST HOME AND AWAY RECORDS FROM 83 TO 86

Who said the VFL/AFL has changed?

This is how the AFL website sees Australian Footballs early days NO MENTION OF THE VFA A bloody disgrace no wonder I never followed a VFL team!Ive had to put up with distorted VFL views like having H Harrison as the real founder of our game and no mention of Tom Wills for a long time in fact the VFL HQ were called Henry Harrison House. What happened between 1866 and 1896 NOTHING???? No mention of where any of the VFL clubs came from jeez must have been by magic! This is very poor version of our games history and it is sad that youngesters are being fed this crap from the AFL via the internet as the truth! It looks as though the AFL/VFL are still smarting from the FACT that the VFA preceded them by 20 years and dared to take the mighty VFL on many times over the decades by their obvious twisting of historical truth. AFL History In 1857, Tom Wills, one of the founders of Australian Football, returned to Australia after schooling in England where he was football captain of Rugby School and a brilliant cricketer. Initially, he advocated the winter game of football as a way of keeping cricketers fit during off-season. The new game was devised by Wills, his cousin H.C.A. Harrison, W.J. Hammersley and J.B. Thompson. The Melbourne Football Club was formed on August 7, 1858 – the year of the code’s first recorded match between Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar School. The game quickly blossomed. The Geelong Football Club was formed in 1859 and in 1866 an updated set of rules was put in place and competition started. The Victorian Football League was established in 1896 and the following year the League’s first games were played among the foundation clubs – Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Geelong, Melbourne, St Kilda and South Melbourne. In 1908, Richmond and University joined the competition. But after the 1914 season, University left the League. In 1925, Footscray (now the Western Bulldogs), Hawthorn and North Melbourne (now the Kangaroos) joined the VFL. This line-up of 12 clubs would remain unchanged until 1987 when the competition expanded to include the West Coast Eagles and the Brisbane Bears. BY 1997, the competition comprised 16 clubs after Adelaide (in 1991), Fremantle (in 1995), and Port Adelaide (in 1997) joined the now Australian Football League and foundation club Fitzroy merged with the Brisbane Bears to form the Brisbane Lions (after the 1996 season).

Meeting at Bridey O'Riley's at midday. Have been doing the same for the past couple of seasons. Also go to the Carlton Social club at half time and after the game. Always a big social day on VFL Grand Final day. Have not missed a vfa/vfl Grand Final for years. First GF was the 1970 Prahran v Williamstown Final. Have not missed a GF since. Have gone to most of the 2nd Division Grand Finals between 1971 and 1988. Best Grand Final was the 1990 Williamstown v Springvale match Best elated after the 1982 2nd Division GF between Northcote v Caulfield Most gutted after the 1985 Sandringham v Williamstown- seagulls lost by a goal. Most boring was the 1995 Springvale v Sandringham Worst GF was the 2000 Sandringham v North Ballarat at Waverley- they sold only light beer and with no pub in sight as Wheelers Hill is too far away. Always like to have a pre social drink where we meet up before the Grand Finals. Poor crowd as well with the Vermont v East Burwood the night before drawing a bigger crowd and also serving full strength beer. Most Fiery the 1976 GF between Port v Dandenong Biggest non event the 1984 2nd Division GF between Box Hill v Oakleigh Last but not least- miss the days of Toorak Park and Junction Oval finals. Best/worst Grand Finals, best memories in the Grand Finals attended Your thoughts ??
