The VFL is investigating a racial slur allegedly directed at former Hawthorn livewire Carl Peterson during a VFL match.

The 24-year-old was playing for the Northern Blues in a VFL Development League match against Williamstown when the degrading remarks were allegedly made towards him.

An AFL Victoria spokesman confirmed a report had been made to the league regarding a racial comment made to a player.

“(An) internal complaint has been lodged by a support staff member,” the spokesman said.

“No formal complaint has been lodged by a player or a club.

“AFL Victoria is investigating this further with the clubs involved.”

It is understood a spectator made the comments, but they were not heard by Peterson at the time.

Peterson, who is of Aboriginal decent and grew up in remote parts of Western Australia, played 17 matches with Hawthorn in 2010 before being de-listed at the end of that season.
