WILLIAMSTOWN coach Peter German and Port Melbourne coach Gary Ayres have called for an overhaul of Liston Trophy voting.

German believes the 3-2-1 voting system could cost one of his star Seagulls the award tonight award, while Ayres said the emergency umpire was better equipped to cast the votes.

The VFL uses the same voting system for its top individual award as used for the Brownlow Medal, with the three field umpires awarding votes to the best three players.

"(The emergency umpire) doesn't have to immerse himself in the goings on of the game," Ayres said.

"You could give the responsibility to him and he can sit back, watch the game unfold and have a better view from the sidelines."

German said a 5-4-3-2-1 format would give a fairer reflection of the best player.
