Looks like the Broken Hill Football League hasn't dropped their fixture yet, so that's something...

I predict the VFL will release theirs sometime in October.

Please now don’t blame AFL for late fixture release. Still a big issue being resolved which is out of AFL’s Hands.

G'day Robbo, any idea what the issue is? Surely could only be broadcast or venue-related?

It’s because some clubs are ungrateful towards channel 7 offering them prime time coverage as that would mean playing games at a neutral venue. The way I see it after nearly losing all tv coverage clubs should feel grateful that channel 7 has come onboard and kept coverage going and now offering prime time coverage to clubs that may get in excess of 50,000 viewers. I would have thought gratitude was the right sentiment and not resentment.

Mega, most clubs have lights at their own venues so there is no need for neutral venues. Frankston Park, Box Hill City Oval, Casey Fields and North Port all have them and so do most of the grounds used by the AFL 2's. So there's no excuse on that score.

Kentessential, Broken Hill is one of the few in the footy zone (so to speak). The majority of SA, WA and Tassie is out and the only one missing he footy zone of NSW aside from the Hill is Hume. A number of them are usually not out until March anyway and those ones usually begin later in April. That's especially the case this year given when Easter is.

Are Box Hill's lights up to broadcast standard? I know the ones at Frankston and Port Melbourne are, and I know Casey Fields has been used for night sports in the past.

Mega, that increase in TV viewership (if it even happens) means absolutely nothing unless it translates into some kind of tangible benefit for the clubs giving up home games to play them. Frankston playing a home game at North Port would bring in a much smaller crowd than if we played at home, meaning we get less revenue from entry fees and canteen sales (and that is assuming we get to keep 100% of that money.) That is not something our club can afford considering we were barely making a profit before we had a full-time coach and a finals-quality list. So unless you can tell me with confidence that playing at Port Melbourne on a Saturday night will bring in more revenue than playing at our actual home ground, I'm not going to react to this move with gratitude. Not when we're being asked to give up a home game and travel into the city despite having broadcast quality lights ourselves.

Pretty sure the lights at Box Hill are better than they were. And Seven has added lights if needed in the past (they did it to Whitten Oval a few times for AFLW) so it wouldn't be out of the question for grounds that don't have adequate lighting to be helped - Cramer Street would definitely be on there as would Coburg and Sandringham.

The neutral venue idea can only work if it's distributed evenly (as with Waverley Park in the old days). But we would then be discriminating against the four northern AFL reserves teams and Southport. Night games - yes - but at the home venue of the home team and nowhere else. If that's the hold up then it has to be nipped in the bud PDQ!
