Northern Blues crash to heaviest VFL defeat in more than one year against Richmond

NORTHERN Blues crashed to their heaviest defeat in more than a year on Sunday, annihilated by 84 points by a ruthless Richmond at Punt Road Oval.

The Tigers dominated from quarter-time at their traditional home, recording 29 scoring shots to five after the teams were level at the first break.

Richmond kicked 14 goals to two in the last three quarters, blitzing a Blues side bereft of answers 16.19 (115) to 4.7 (31).

Taylor Hunt signalled the Tigers’ intentions in the second quarter, starting a run of four majors as the hosts kicked 26 points clear.

Liam Sumner snapped truly to end Richmond’s streak, however any thoughts of a comeback were short-lived.

The wins keep piling up for high-flying Williamstown in the Victorian Football League.

The second-placed Seagulls made it six victories on the trot when they pulled away from North Ballarat in the second half to record a 56-point win at Burbank Oval on Sunday.

It could have been an even bigger margin had the Seagulls not wasted a stack of chances in front of goal, turning just 16 of 38 scoring shots into goals.

They broke away from the Roosters in the third term, but could only register 5.10 for the quarter.

Jack Dorgan, Lachie Schultz and Nick Meese were the standouts for Williamstown, while Arryn Siposs and Ben Cavarra kicked three goals each on a day when the side had 10 individual goalkickers.

VFL out to end long state game drought as WAFL chases first win on Victorian soil this weekend

A LENGTHY drought will be broken or history made when the Victorian Football League and West Australian Football League clash on Saturday at North Port Oval.

The VFL last triumphed in a representative match in 2012, when it thrashed the Tasmanian State League by 108 points, with its four-year winless run started by the WAFL in 2013.

Meanwhile, the WAFL has never won a state game in Victoria, beaten in 23 matches since it first took on the VFL on away soil in 1904.

Nine players with AFL experience will pull on the Big V jumper this weekend, including Cam O’Shea (Northern Blues), Eli Templeton (Port Melbourne) and Andrew Moore (Box Hill Hawks).
