Port Melbourne season 2020 player movement

I cant believe that it is that time of the year again when we need to start another Port Melbourne player movement thread - as Rocky said to Paulie - "time goes tooooo faaaaaaaaaaaaaast"..

Anyways to begin - a sad one and a player that will be hard to replace and will definetely be missed by the Borough. A player who through his Port Melbourne journey became more versatile the more he played. He had the ability to ruck, play forward and back. I'm of course talking of the retirement of Khan Heretuku who is retiring from VFL football. Had a great few seasons at Port being recruited by VFLFOOtys own Lauchie from Frankston in season 2015.

I feel like Port should look for another big man to replace Khan as it is often evident that the size difference against some of the AFL sides is a advantage.

Been a very good player over a long period Khan. Port definitely got the best of him, was good a at Frankston but  took his game to another level under Ayres.

Unlucky to miss Ports premiership in 2017 - getting injuried in the Preliminary final.

Port will no doubt be trying to get Matthew Lobbe, but he will be 31 next year, and Werribee may have the advantage as he was drafted by and coached by Chocco in his early days at Port Adelaide.

As you guys have said a sad loss and a terrific player.

"Big news with fan favourite Khan Haretuku announcing his retirement. Likely to play in 2021 with the Frankston Bombers. Desperately unlucky not to be a premiership player and was largely responsible for getting Port over the line in the Preliminary Final in 2017."

There has been some signings prior to then of this season. I'll try and dug those up and add them to this thread.

One of those signings was Hunt, a young player of around 21 years of age playing in the S.E. metro division 1 comp. He is similar to Khan in a couple of ways but also has some differences. The similarities are that he can play both as a forward or defender, has a great pair of hands and at 197cm is also a tall.

Unlike Khan he has a much thinner frame and isn't as strongly built. Shows plenty of promise and could be a great player but again unlike Khan has come onto the Port Melbourne list without being a proven VFL player.

Having said all that I don't think that Hunt was signed as a Heretaku replacement.

On a separate note, I don't expect this thread to be as active as seasons gone by (I remember a few years ago we had 15 pages on Port player movements) as all VFL clubs will now have a reduced list. Lists are now capped to 40 from 46.

What you are saying Mega that he is nothing bloody like Khan but similar who will be hard to replace even though he was never your player in the first place.

Just go out & pirate another gun from some poor struggling club.

We might be from the bush. but we ain't green

You've become very bitter Digs! That's how football works, if you have a deficiency that you can't cover from within then you look to recruit.

Certainly NOT bitter NorthPort just stating the facts .
Often wonder how it would be if the boot was on the other foot !!

How else are we meant to get quality at our club ? You can't develop them as theirs no development league, theirs no juniors so theirs no way to groom players through the ranks to the first team. I'm afraid Digs that in the current climate the only way to get quality players is from other clubs. Gone are the days that VFL players played junior football at your club with the bulk of the senior side made up of EX juniors.

Port is not the only club that operates this way, im uncertain what you expect Port and other clubs to do to cover losses ? Where do you expect players to come from if theirs no juniors ? Just get passes by on Williamstown rd and ask them if they want a run ?

Loyalty at football clubs is old fashioned and almost non existant now. Contracts in football dont mean anything anymore - if a player or coach wants out all they have to do is ask. If a VFL player gets a better offer why wouldnt he swap clubs especially in the VFL where payment is not great. As Mega says, Gilligan has f****d the player pathways to the VFL how else can you get quality players?

I agree with you Bearsman - Frankston and opposition supporters may say that he was not originally a Port player but its fair to say that whilst he didn;t start at Port he played his best football at the Borough and his footy was taken to another level.

Blake Pearson is the next one to go. Another VFL retirement. His pace will definetelly be missed - a very dangerous player on his day.
