NEW VFL COMPETITION

Just read this in Rupert's Rag, got any legs???

Have we seen the last of the VFL as we know it, depending on what happens in 2020?

The five stand-alone teams in Coburg, Frankston, Port Melbourne, Werribee and Williamstown are preparing for a 10-team VFL competition that could include suburban powerhouses such as Vermont, Keilor and Balwyn, and potentially Box Hill, Preston and Sandringham.

That would leave 10 Victorian-based AFL teams to compete in a reserves competition.

I wish the media would stop speculating and what might or might not happen. We know this season if it goes ahead is like no other. Ride it out and lets see what happens?

Wally thank you for posting, in this time people when people are encouraged to stay home its nice to see some posts come through. If you found the article online could you please post the address?

If they were going to make a new competition why not strengthen it by making it state wide and include a Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong and another strong regional side which could be perhaps the strongest club in that area or maybe a new entity representing that region. Having said that 10 teams is a nice fit as it allows for 18 rounds with a perfect home and away schedule  (every side plays each other twice).

To make it a little more interesting at the bottom end of the table and to avoid clubs being complacent why not have the last side relegated back to their local league and a new team promoted annually.

Another idea, why dont Port, Williamstown, Coburg, Frankston, Coburg, the Tasmanian club that is due to enter next year join with the SANFL to make a national 2nd division.

At the end of the day this is all speculation about something that may not go ahead therefore the main purpose of the post was to kill time (and not to be taken as realistic likely suggestions) at home in a very out of the ordinary and somewhat boring time.

Lets hope so!

The article I read Wally was very short and made no mention of any suburban clubs joining, perhaps a different edition,I don't know.I think this will be the lever the AFL needs to finally cut the cord with the standalones and just run their own comp, makes sense really, they can please themselves how they use their reserves even a la david king and not play for points.I always hoped we could get a super suburban league up but the problem I see is that clubs like Vermont, noble park etc are already in a great comp  which would put the vfl to shame in terms of support, even their facilities are equal or better than some vfl clubs ,in short why would they leave an ideal comp to join a basket case? Where does that leave the 5 standalones is the question, maybe join the vafa  or their local comp, not ideal but might be no other option, tough times ahead whatever

I took it from an article by Jon Anderson in the Currant Bun. Here is the link, but its probably behind a paywall. If you don't have access I can copy and paste the entire article but what i posted is all that he said about the VFL

CGULL you predict that if the AFL teams pull out that their will no longer be a competition for our clubs to play in and may have to play in the VAFA or local comps. You also mention that you dont want a competition with the AFL reserves.

Therefore you would rather have the AFL reserves sides pull out and have our sides play in either the VAFA or local comps rather than playing in the countries 2nd strongest comp (which also has a lot more media coverage - t.v., radio etc) ?

I didn't say I didn't want a competition with AFL reserves,I said it makes sense from an AFL perspective not to have standalones involved.I hear what you say regarding, publicity, better standard etc but the truth is the competition is compromised in a number of ways but if you're prepared to cop that then fair enough,it's not for me anymore though
