billy, football must have been quite 'colourful' back in the 50's - just found this article in The Argus from July 1952 that reports how a Sandringham trainer got reported for attempting to strike/assault a field umpire (and was subsequently rubbed out for life!) and how 50 women were involved in a brawl at the Port-Camberwell game, also some shenanagins at the Carlton-Hawthorn game the same day - just another day at the footy in Melbourne!
Considering that the whole country stops these days when a player is verbally abused i reckon the whole league would have been cancelled if the shenanigans of yesteryear happened today - 50 Camberwell women involved in a brawl - would have thought in the 50s they were not allowed outta the kitchen!

Yep MegA, the Camberwell female supporters all brawling amongst themselves while the Port 'ladies' were busy knocking out BurraBurgers
Sure was Wally esp at Port, Moorabbin and Oakleigh matches where as a kid I witnessed a number of wild fights and brawls both on and off the field. Also a few times the umpires had to escorted from the ground to their cars by police as an angry mob was out to get them!
When I was about 14-15 I got hit over the head with an umbrella by a female Port supporter behind the Australia Post end goals at North Port for having a go at a Port players dog act behind play!
During the 50s esp there were a number of players who aledgelly "fainted" behind play and the goal umpires were either too scared or gutless to report the perpertrators!
