Gill resignation

Howdy

Wondering what people think about how the VFL will be affected following Gills resignation. Is this a positive for the VFL and grass roots football or is it too difficult to tell what direction the comp will go? Did Gill have a big involvement in the direction of the comp or was it somebody else's baby ?

Ild like to see stand alones given greater assistance by doing away with the mandatory 6 player under 22 rule and the reintroduction of the development league in its place - wishful thinking I know.

The development league is a must, not just for the standalone clubs but it is just as important to aligned clubs to have a full playing list and not just'enough to make up the numbers'. I wonder which way the clubs would vote on it.

I do wonder who will replace Gill and whether the VFA/VFL is even on their radar. Fingers crossed!

Yes the 6 player rule is no good. Don't get me wrong their are some quality players, but I think the ratio is wrong. If they keep the rule, perhaps 3-4 is a better balance.

Impossible to know what might happen until the new CEO outlines his plans. Can't imagine many changes in the short term though, money is an issue and plenty of AFL issues to deal with.

I had some info a couple of years ago, which I thought was reliable, that he was ready to resign just as Covid hit, and that Brendan Gale had the job if he wanted it. Not sure who else would be in the running now...

I guess your right Bearsman - probably not alot would change and as Northport said it wouldn't be priority number one - its probably down the bottom of the pile.

It will be interesting to see if the new CEO will be less of a traditionalist than McLaughlin and is prepared to change or get rid of some of the things Gilligan has steadfastly supported. Umpires bouncing the ball - seems to get worse every year to me, and its become  an embarrasment watching these blokes trying to bounce the ball. No night GF, and the pathetic technology they use for score reviews. If they cant get someting that proves beyond doubt what happened they shouldnt use anything. Just go back to the umpire being right. Hopefully and most importantly I hope he/she will stop using the VFL for trials of new rules.
