Devils Exodus continues
Gibbke will be heartened - Scott Stephens (last years co captain) is playing local footy in Launy and not for the Devils this year!

Why a decent player and a bit of a loss, how the hell was he co captain after missing a year? A way is needed to be found so that the Devils can attract and retain Northern players who live up North and fast. Prehaps training at Oatlands?

It definetely is not a simple issue - especially for the older players who have established careers, houses, relationships - easier for the younger guys to start off Reckon they (guys in the North) should be treated like all recruits and looked after - need dollars for that! Interesting that Stephens stated that he believes in the centralisation and that it would work in the long run Hope the recruits are good otherwise they are going to struggle

they used to have a training squad up north a couple of years ago when they made the finals. If it worked then why cant it now? All it would need is say a Launceston bassed assistant coach

Agree - but you would think they would need to train together at least once a week

That extra funding is supposed to stop this sort of thing...the players are quitting because they are balancing work and the commitment to travel...no VFL club has the finances to pay their players as full time pros, but none of them are having theoretically half the team travelling in their own cars across a whole state to train, either... Stephens words of support for the centralisation ring hollow when he won't do it himself as captain of the side...our team is a rudderless ship in drydock in Hobart...

Love your passion for Tassie footy gibbke - I can relate to it. Totally agree that the Devils need to be statewide how this works is another matter - think with the centralisation it will take a while to work and will obviously be easier for the younger guys As for the funding there is a fair bit of anger here with the 500 000 a year sponsorship for the Hawks to play in Launy - this should be directed to Tassie footy

I was under the impression that the state govt was underwriting the Hawks to boost tourism...so that to me isn't sports development money anyway, especially when the biggest controversy was over whether the Lions count as a Vic team or not...apparently worth 1500 paying tourists...

Hi again Gibbke etc The Devils are planning on playing a game at Burnie this year Scott Wade stated that the match would not be promoted as a stand alone game. They are negotiating with the VFL to "buy" a game v Coburg. "We want to turn this into an event, so it will also involve a business luncheon, promotions with Auskick and probably a NTFL game as a curtain raiser." AFL Tas stopped playing games on the Coast three years ago after poor support and aconcerns over unsuitable infrastructure. Also Mathew Armstrong has returned to the Devils to work in a 'advisory capactiy' - He stated that 'I am going to be about and I'll be n the match committe and there game day having a look but I won't be in the (coaches) box. It is just to be around for the coaches and players. It is nothing official. Re Creswell he stated that "He's played enough footy to know what is going on and he's been under some good coaches - it is his ship. Interesting times with the Devils

Are the Geappen boys still running around in Tassie?
taswegian
Yep - Brett Geappen was co captain last year and is playing again this year with the Devils. Mathew Geappen has been player coaching North Hobart (Not playing Devils) and I am not sure what has happened to Tim who is the tallest of the brothers but has not played Devils for a few years All handy players - Brett and Mathew hard at it bit un likely looking but effective players - Tim more of a athletic player Cheers
