EXCLUSIVE: WERRIBEE has reappointed Simon Atkins as coach, giving him a sixth season at the VFL club. Atkins, whose current contract finished at the end of the season, has been given a one-year contract extension.

The former Western Bulldogs and Fitzroy player delayed contract discussions earlier in the season to get the 2008 preliminary finalist through a form slump.

Werribee chief executive Mark Penaluna said the club was delighted to retain the part-time coach.

“At this level of football it is about working in partnerships and communication. Simon has really blossomed in the role as coach,” he said last night.

Former North Melbourne player and dumped Kangaroos assistant coach Anthony Rock was reported to be the favourite to snare the Werribee job, but Penaluna said it “didn’t get past first base”.

“Anthony was just a name that had been mentioned but that really didn’t get past first base,” Penaluna said.

Werribee just missed the VFL finals after finishing ninth.
