Sandringham Zebras upgrade starts

SANDRINGHAM Football Club is kicking goals in its effort to become a premier VFL sporting ground, with major renovations set to start next week.

The Beach Rd home of the Zebras will be transformed and its social club will be expanded and upgraded.

Work on the $1.1 million project - funded by AFL Victoria, the State Government, Bayside Council and the club - will begin on October 7.

General manager John Mennie said the update was urgently needed.

“The revamp is extremely important as the building was getting into a derelict condition through its age,” Mr Mennie said.

“We need to have a modern facility in keeping with the standards people expect.

“And through functions and corporate events, it can generate income to sustain us into the future.”

The 120-seat, 1970s-style entertainment area will be boosted by 60 extra seats, a new disability lift, contemporary furnishings and be redesigned to maximise the significant sea views.

Bayside Mayor James Long said clubs like Sandringham helped keep the community active and healthy.

“When clubs like this prosper, the community prospers,” he said.

Work will be finished by early next year in time for the start of the 2010 season.
