NEW Geelong VFL revelation Ben Johnson knows exactly who to turn to in the locker room to draw inspiration.

As much as the support comes from every angle at Skilled Stadium, his story has plenty of similarities to James Podsiadly's.

Johnson had given up on his AFL dream after missing out on selection in the 2006 national draft.

Instead, he was plying his trade as a carpenter in Melbourne during the week and playing suburban footy with his mates for Bell Park in the Geelong Football League on Saturdays.

"AFL was probably the furthest thing from my mind," Johnson said. "I still loved playing footy but, back then, if you missed the draft (as a teenager) you tended not to get drafted after that."
