Former Essendon coach Matthew Knights will join AFL premiers Geelong next year as coach of their VFL team.

Knights coached the Bombers for three seasons, guiding them to a finals appearance in 2009 before being sacked a year later.

Cats senior coach Chris Scott said Knights was a fine mentor for younger players.
