THE coach was sacked after a few games.
His replacement improved the team so dramatically it won the premiership.
Six months later, the club disappeared.
By any measure Moorabbin's 1963 season in the VFA was out of the ordinary.
Grand final glory over great rival Sandringham sprang from a mediocre start.
But the Kangaroos never made it to 1964. They were kicked out of the association and off their Linton St ground.
"Intriguing, isn't it?" Graham Dunscombe says, glasses on his forehead as he takes in morning sun at his Beaumaris home.
It was 50 years ago that Dunscombe, 88, coached Moorabbin to the premiership and his memories of the season are strong.
He'll never forget the reception the players received when they arrived at a celebratory dinner at the club.
"They gave us a very hearty welcome," he says.
